On a stock Mk1 golf or fox.....theres a hole in the front doors for speakers. How big is the hole in DIA? What is the max size speaker that can comfy fit there.....and anyone got a template to cut the correct hole size and position into the door panels?

i am not speaking of the window, if you have ever removed the door panel up, you would have seen the window itself doesn't come close to the speaker.
its the window winder itself that you wont be able to turn to open the window as it will hit the speaker on the outside.

Even still....with a decent spacer it will pass

Frog I think you never read properly... the spacer will help the window itself go down yes.
But what Bru-CTI is referring to is you won't be able to turn the window winder without scraping your knuckles.
The speaker sits too close to the window winder which causes a problem, a spacer can't solve this AFAIK.

No prob... its just that I was looking at putting some 6.5" speakers in our mk1 as well and I see this might be a problem.
But I'm going to try to find a way to make it fit... some people fit electric windows to help with this.

You could also grind the back end of the window winder handle so that you can get enough clearance over the speaker cover.

I had this problem when i fitted sound in my old shuttle
5 1/4 is the max it will take and the speaker may still touch the window winder. Realy annoying!!!
On my velo we managed to fit 6s up front. Used a spacer to give the window space inside the door and it cleared the winder.
The newer models came with short window winders, this makes a differance.
Also try position the speaker closer to the the bottom corner of the door.
If you can get speakers that sit flush on the door pad, that may also work as the winder will travel over the speaker and not touch.
Best way around it is to build a nice set speaker pods, that way you can position the speaker perfectly and can go with the max size speaker aswel. Iv had 4s, 5s and 6s and the sixes sound the best by far. Give nice midbass, esp in the the custom housing.
Hope that helps

well all the ideas here are helping me cos I for one still need to cross this bridge... and from all this it looks like I'll stay away for a while.
But I agree that 6's are the best that's why I'll have to make a plan to fit them!

cut a ring off super wood.mounted mid onto the super wood from the back then mounted the super wood ring and speaker from the inside of the door.the ring has to be about an inch or two bigger because the 6.5" mid is the size of the cut out in the door.

abit of a mission but it works and i can take out my door panel without taking out the speaker...and for the cover just use a thin ring...cover with cloth and mount onto door panel.it's old dash 2003 with the 2piece window.

I've got a citiRox and 6.5" mids fits perfectly .. it does not touch the window winders at all
we jus popped out the cardboard cutouts and fitted the speakers .. there was no cutting necessary

Yes but that's on the newer models which accommodate for speakers in the doors... the older one's with no door speakers might give problems
