DIY Mk2 front seatbelt replacement

Post by Jetta2 »

Replaced the Jetta's front seatbelts as the originals where faded from the sun and getting frayed from 18 years of abuse.

Went to VW in Menlyn to get new belts, got told that the part number and hence the price does not exist on the sysem anymore

No worries, spoke to one of the Mech's(can't remember name) and he said get Velo belts, straight swop. Just a 2 small "mods" that must be done to make them fit 100%.

So I got 2 Velo front belts at R550-70 for both. Very good price IMHO.

So tools needed:

Philips screwdriver
17 socket and ratchet + short extension
17 ring/flat spanner
Hammer

Here we go:

First, pull up the plastic peices covering the screws, remove screws. Remove screw on the top of the seatbelt cover as well:

Pull back the door rubbers:

Remove the bottom bolt for the safety belt and remove the plastic cover by sliding it a bit downwards and pull it out the way:

Take the small plastic cover out of the seatbelt cover and pull it off the seatbelt. It has a small split in the one corner to make it removable:

Pull off the cover from the top bolt, remove bolt and pass the belt through the plastic cover:

Put the plastic cover out the way and then remove the bottom bolt holding the belt mechanism:

Take the hammer and knock this area a bit so the new belt can fit. The Velo mechanism is slightly wider on one side than the original one. This "mod" only has to be done on the driver's side.

Take new belt and put it in place. Make sure the little tabs on the chassis go into the grooves on the new belt.

Feed the new belt through the cover:

Now for the second "mod". Take the bolt cover off the new belt's top part.
Take off the paper washer and the 2 metal spacers.
Put paper washer back on and tighten up:

And it is done.

Time taken for both sides: 35 minutes.
