1984 Golf mk1 Auto Questions

Post by Imotions »

Hi All

After selling my Jumbo MK2 I moved on with life bought other brands etc and ended up getting me a 1984 Golf mk1 Automatic

It is a 1.5 Carb auto 3speed
im having difficulty on getting the idle in P and N to stay low

Is there anyone on the platform that owns one orhas any knowledge on how do i set it as i tried setting at the distributor but it cuts off or revs high still

010 box. Had one in my 1984 Jetta GLS, see rides thread in my signature.

They are lazy little lards, but the guys in the states modify these for drag racing by changing one of the shafts.

Could be that the carb has an "aftermarket" air control valve, found in the GW service kits, these are inferrior to the original VW air screw.
Potenital leaks in the base plate as well, just make sure when you buy a replacement, that it has the same bracket for the kickdown cable to the box

Hi Marzbars
Thank you for your response
Your response answers quite a bit as my bro in law for some reason though the carb that the car had was dead so he took one off a Caddy bakkie and ever since its acting up-
Last night i played with the distributor which made it idle a bit better but today when driving consumption went up now
my base plate is new i even sprayed carb cleaner to see if it stalls or picks up revs but nothing
The braker booster vacuums are not in place and the distributor doesnt have the advance on it with that pipe running to the carb somewhere

i fiddled witht he air screw i think (the flat screw just below the accel cable) that did help also with the idle but fuel consumption goes up

do you maybe know what other boxes with more gears will fit :) this would be so much better on keeping the stock engine

What do u mean by the brake booster vacuums are not in place?
If they are disconnected, that's a vacuum leak - it will cause idle issues.

The flat screw beneath the accel cable should be the idle screw.

When a car tailgates me, i slow down - then floor it and give them a cloud of diesel smoke to choke on :driving:

Manual carb will not work on an automatic

Rather get the carb serviced that was in there

brake booster vacuums have plugs on it to block it -

What's the idle difference between P/N and D/R?
