Golf MK7 1.4 tsi Mechatronic unit

Post by Anthony WP »

I have a Mk7 1.4tsi 2015 model with 93000km. The mechatronic unit just gave in. Wanted to know if this is common on these vehicles, and what could’ve caused this? Bought the car in 2018 with 60000km.

What's your symptoms?

How did you arrive to the diagnosis that the mech failed?

Did you get the car scanned for error codes and what were the codes?

The symptoms: the car couldn't drive or reverse but could go into neutral. And the error on board was... error: gearbox.
VW Barons Bellville did the diagnostics and that is what their report says. As for error codes I didn't ask.

First and foremost, get the car scanned by someone in your area that has VCDS or take it to a shop that can diagnose it.

Car has pretty low mileage for a mech failure but then also, the mech can fail at any time.

You need to check your codes as it could be a solenoid faulty, clutch worn out, etc, and the car will tell you what's wrong as last thing you want to do is just replace the mechatronics and it doesn't solve the problem.

When you get the codes, post it for us to check and for us to give you a second opinion.

If it is possible to move/drive the car, you could also contact VAGSpec Centre for a second opinion.

Just as a side note - There are places where you can get the Mechatronics unit repaired. First diagnose whether this is the actual cause.

Aah the amazing DQ200 7 speed dry clutch gearbox.

Mechatronics failure is not if it's going to break, but rather when it's going to break.

Contact Jamiel at J2 performance in Ottery. He can sort you out.

Thanks everyone for the advice. Unfortunately the car can’t drive, so its still at the dealer. The dealer is dealing with my warranty(fortunately I extended it end last yr). The warranty guys also requested a more detailed report on the fault logs. If the warranty don't sort this out with the dealer, I’ll make contact with the guys recommended.
So I take it this is common thing with these units 😢 Look its a very nice family ride and the fuel economy is great, just disappointed that this happened.

Dealer should give you a detailed list of fault codes, especially on gearbox. Ask them and send it to us on the forum.

If you get nowhere with the dealers, I would second that recommendation of J2 Auto/Performance in Ottery.
They won't waste your time and will get you sorted out without any issues.

Just an update got all the documents from the dealer warranty covers big part of R37700fix😬 as the part alone is R32400. The warranty I was sold doesn't cover the full amount(story for another day) 🙄😢 but VW’s labour an hour which I’m covering is crazy. So labour and a few bolts nuts and screws later its R7136 for me 😓. I was also told by the dealer the cost split and I have to pay higher rate then Motorite🤷🏽‍♂️ Anyways thanks again for the advice and suggestions next time I’ll contact the guys recommended.

R7k is better than having to pay full R44k. Pity about the warrranty exclusion  That said, my Motorite policy (Maintenance plan) always paid 100%, so I guess it comes down to semantics and what they said they sold you vs reality. At least you should be good now.... :driving:

I guess the whole "right to choose" in terms of car servicing can't come too soon.

Yes agree Howie. Maintenance plan and mastercar warranty ended last yr Dec. I took out an extended warranty and thought I was covered(got the double up supreme warranty). Listened to the wrong advice and didn't read docs properly 🤭😓. Just happy to get it sorted and get it on the rd again.
Cant wait for the right to choose 🤗

Hey Ouens, Wakkind ...

just wanted to share my MECHATRONIC issue with you on my Golf 7 GTi 2016, (bought the car 5 months ago)
WORST EXPERIENCE EVER ....error was "GEARBOX IN ERROR MODE" ... it could drive a little, but I felt I was damaging the vehicle in some way,
Did the diagnostics and it was the Mechatronic issue. Called CITTON cars in Menlyn, they brushed me off ... and nothing they could do ... said that their workshop in Gezina will call me, this was March 29th ... LUCKILY the warranty covered a huge portion, I paid in 5k ... and took my car yesterday 10th May ... missed driving this car ... but will see if theres any other issues ... wish the process was faster .. thinking about a new Polo maybe ...

I have the similar problem. VW quoted me 36k on the mechatronic part alone. I took the gearbox to a mechanic for repairs and he is now saying the TCM blew when coding. Is this possible 🤯?
