Sounds like Tappets?

Hi All,

I'm new to the forum. :hi:

I have just purchased myself a used 2011 Polo R 1.6 Tdi as my daily ride, The car has 150k Kms, and has a full history with VW till 135k kms.
I have driven the car a few days now and noticed that its rather rowdy Tappet/Lifters type sound between 1000 to 2000rpms.
The car runs fine, just concerned about the sound as its too loud for comfort, I owned a 04 1.9tdi few years back and it was never this rowdy right till 190k kms when i sold it.

Is this Normal on the 1.6 TDi's? should I be concerned? I did not opt for additional warranty, so I'm basically on my own for any repairs after I took delivery,I may be able to persuade the car sales to take a look, but I though I will get some feed back from the Gurus before approaching the car sales.
The car sales has mentioned that all 4 injectors have been replaced and I have a 2 year warranty on these as well.

Your info and feedback will be appreciated

Regards
Rom

THe tappet noise could be injectors. Have the car scanned to ensure injector values are within spec. Preferably not at the same place the injectors were replaced at or the car bought to get an unbiased opinion.

Or simply go drive a few others and hear if they sound the same.

Or perhaps make sure the correct spec oil was put in the car.
When my car was serviced elsewhere they put in the wrong spec oil and it caused noisy lifters.
Replaced with the correct oil - issue gone.

@ Brad, valid observation...
The car was serviced before I took delivery, and on inspection the dipstick shows clean oil, It is possible that a cheap inferior quality was used.

I find very often that people never check the exact spec of the oil and just chuck any oil in that they can find. A reputable company chucked petrol oil in my diesel once  drained it and refilled and was fine.

I guess you could check with them what oil they used? Alternatively drain and refill yourself as per the book.

Sure , anything is possible when it comes to oil replacement.

Do bear in mind diesels are typically "louder" than petrol cars.

My Jetta 4 makes a tappety kind of noise as well , I need to check the oil levels but I am using good quality synthetic 5w30 oil.

Another thing to bear in mind is the vw approval spec of the oil. I would think that the 1.6 tdi has a dpf so would then require vw507 spec oil. Not all 5w30 oils meet this spec so check the bottle.

@ malphil,

Yes sounds very similar..

Just an update, I took the car back to the car sales and it was sent in for diagnosis to the workshop, They have reported that injectors 3 and 4 has a leak, I also inspected the invoice and warranty that was given to me for injectors and noticed the invoice charges for refurbishment of injectors...

This is a bit of a concern as based on the forum my car should have pizeo injectors if i got the name right that cannot be refurbished.

The Workshop has admitted its rather rowdy and is busy carrying out repairs, I will feed back out come once I have the car back.

Status Update

The current diagnosis is the tappet like noise is referred to as a "Diesel Knock", In my case injector 3 and 4 have a leak and under fueling.
The Injectors have been stripped off the car and sent to Bosch for a full refurbishment and calibration.

As investigation has shown these injectors cost around R12k each new, once I received my vehicle I will be able to evaluate and feed back as well as provide information on the cost of the repair for anyone who may find themselves with the similar problem.

I doubt I can comment on any power difference as I'm new to the car. I can however say I did find the car originally sluggish on take off and put it down to the engine size and low KW of the engine, not sure if this will improve after the injectors refurb.

Updates to follow

I have enquired a lot and it does not appear that anybody in south africa can refurb piezo injectors.
So if they do that and it is successfull I would very much like to know where those went.
I have even spoken to almost every big bosch diesel refurb shop and they all tell me the same thing.

Friend had the same issue with his 2011 1.6tdi Cross Polo. Was a warranty claim, he traded the polo in for a Tiguan and as far as I know VW sorted the Polo out to then re-sell

Update....

I finally picked up my car yesterday and happy to report that the tappet like noise has been resolved, with the replacement of injector 3 and 4.

After some sound advice from Panic (Thanks for the heads up Panic  ) I managed to convince the dealer to replace the injectors with new ones instead of refurbished ones.

I have been told the new injectors are supplied from Bosch as VW is too expensive, estimated cost around R5500 each, The injectors was fitted by ACD workshop and sent to Bryanston VW for coding.

However the ACD Workshop did confirm that these injectors can be refurbed @ http://www.randburgdiesel.co.za/ and they have used them successfully before, may be worth checking with them if you encounter such a issue.

The Car pulls a lot smoother and sounds a lot quieter now.

Thank you all for your feedback and suggestions.
