Welcome to the Golf 7 Owners Discussion Corner.
After chatting with another Golf 7 owner on the forum we decided it might be good time to start a thread dedicated to Golf 7 owners. Something similar to the Official 6R Polo GTI thread.
Here we can discuss likes/dislikes on our Golf 7's but more importantly possible issues we experience. Also any additional information around and/or about the Golf 7 will be welcomed.
As of 14 March 2013 I think there are only two Golf 7 owners on the forum but that should start increasing as time goes by.
Let me start. I have a February 2013 Golf 7 1.4 TSI Comfortline manual with high-beam assist, 5.8" composition media radio and iPod prep as extras.
Likes
Interior finish and build quality is the best I have ever had
Boot is huge compared to my previous cars
The ride is very comfortable and feels very secure on the road
Touch screen radio is easy to use
Fuel consumption is excellent
Dislikes
The air vent on the passenger side trim is normal plastic and not brushed metal like the others

***Confirmed Common Issues***
- Waste gate rattle 1.4 TSI only (clip available from VW, part no. 04E-145-220)
- Bad reception on 5.8" media composition radio (VW can enable RDS & AF on request to improve signal but still waiting on a working software update)
- Driver's side windscreen wiper leaves water streak (redesign of wiper blade in progress by VW)
- Noise from mostly the rear of the car when driving over rough terrain (possibly suspension, VW is aware of the issue but no fix yet)
***Unconfirmed Common Issues***
- Driver's side window noisy when winding up or down (might need some lubrication)

All I can tell from the golf 7 is that the tsi (90kw) seems to be slower than my Golf 6 tsi (90kw).
I had 3 runs with someone the other day, from pull off, from 2nd gear uphill, and level road rolling run. On all 3 "races" I ended up in front...

Meh - the 7 is still a much better car.

Guessing it's due to the weight difference between the 2 - power to weight should be less in the G7??

G7 is 100Kgs lighter than a G6. So, it should have an edge..

New 1.4TSI is 90kw & 200nm on Trendline & Comfortline (Turbo)
On the Highline it's 103kw & 250nm (Turbo) but without ACT as per EU & UK.

New 1.4TSI is 103kw and turbo only AFAIK..
yes was taking a piss and yes it is turbo only, drove it and it goes well. Not sure power output but I enjoyed it with bluemotion tech and what not.

I have read some reports that even the Highline 1.4 TSI is turbo only.

If you referring to me... mine is the 90kw version as well.
Well maybe the G7 is better but I couldnt find anything wrong with my G6 as well, also a great car.

Your right, all EA211 TSI's are turbo only..difference is our 103kw 1.4TSI does not have Active Cylinder Management.

Why do we never get the cool toys.
Anyhow my car is with VW today for them to check the possible issues I have. I am mostly worried about that noise from the front of my car.
**Update**
Got my car back from VW and the noise I am hearing from the front of the car is the wastegate actuator rod rattling. VWSA is apparently aware of the issue but there is no official fix for it yet.
I did some checking and I see there was a similar problem on the Golf 6. Maybe that same clip made to fix the problem can help with my issue?

I dont own G7 but looking at buying 1.Have 1.4tsi h/l touran producing 103kw.
Re 1.4tsi highline G7, it is twincharged and produces 15kw less power (same 103kw as touran h/l which has 220nm torque) but 10nm more torque than b4, now @ 250newtons. ontensibly this "detuning" increases the longevity of the powerplant/drivetrain.Less weight over G6 up to 100kg depending on model, extras, etc. of course also aids performance differential of G7 vs. G6.
Having driven Highline of both 6 & 7, the power delivery of 7 is more measured and refined than 6's rather jerky (in my view) delivery of its 118kw.
Oh by the way, the brand new G7 h/l i drove had a rattle inside the driver's door trim.
VW HAS TO GET THIS RIGHT.....CONSIDER THAT THE AURIS/i30 ARE RATTLE FREE even after many thousands of kilos.

Possible issues
Radio reception is very poor and missing the RDS settings menu option
Strange noise coming from the front of the car which sounds like a rapidly opening and closing electrical relay
I have the same issues with my gold 7 TSI comfortline. The radio does not work properly. The signal in normal driving conditions is not clear and it disappears or becomes very noisy every time I drive behind a hill. I have taken it in twice now and now they now say it requires a software update that is not yet available which will enable the AF function of the RDS. But I disagree that the AF should not fix the situation. The reception on any of the stations in manual tuning mode is pathetic. My golf 6's radio reception along the same route that I drive to work was perfect. The VW tech claim to have checked the signal strength, which they say is fine. Yet the demodulated audio sounds poor.
My waste gate also rattles. It did not do it in the first week. I am sure the rattle has become progressively worse in the month and half I have had the car. It is particularly annoying when in 6th gear doing 120km/h on the high way with the cruise control activated. It will continuously rattle until I up the speed so that the revs go up. The service manager at VW says this is normal. I completely disagree. No other brand of car rattles like his. The waste gate actuator rod is loose. When I move it by hand it rattles too. I have tried to escalate this with VW SA last week but I have not had a response yet.
I wonder if there are an other new golf 7 owners out there that are having these problems?

Perhaps the mk6 wastegate clip would fit on the mk7?

I test drove one last week for the SO. We had a 90kw TSI and I was super impressed. Car felt solid, tons of acceleration and the interior felt great.
There may be a G7 in the garage sooner than I anticipated.

I bought one last week for the SO. DSG 1.4 Tsi Comfortline with leather and sunroof.
Very very decent car.. Interior is awesome and not too shabby in the "go" department as well.
I agree with the RDS problem. I seem to lose the radio station quite often. Quite irritating!
Also mine had a problem with the waste gate rod rattling at low revs. Its at VW now so I hope they can get it sorted.

Ja I agree the golf 7 is a pleasure to drive. The ride is incredible. Interior is fantastic. Its just it would be nice to be able to listen to your favorite radio station with the same pleasure.
The wastegate issue doesn't seem to affect the performance of the car. Its just annoying. If you read the overseas forums then it appears this seems to have been a issue with mk6 gtis. The guys talk of some clip. But as of yet there is no fix for the mk7. Mine makes this rattling noise in any gear between 2000 and 3000 rpm, depending on how you load the throttle. You probably wouldn't notice it if the radio worked properly but then again it is even worse with the radio off when you drive around with the windows open. The service manager says it is normal. I disagree.

Well I'm hoping if they replace the wastegate it will be better.. but lets see. Haven't heard back from them today yet.

Great to see some more Golf 7 owners joining the discussion. I have some close up photos of the wastegate arm and linkage in my rides thread linked in the second post. It do not think the Golf 6 clip will help us.

Having driven the G6 90kw 1.4TSI and the the G7 of the same spec, the G7 left me very disapointed in the performance department, seems like VW detuned them as the G6 pulled much much better.
