mk1 door mechanism

Post by 1nsyz1on »

Hi Guys

I am tired of these mk1 door handles and lock mechanisms.

Is there any way to modify these doors, by either modifying & fitting another car's mechanism or just modifying the OEM stuff to better open up the doors.

I've heard that braising the trigger that pushes down helps. But I got no welding skillz! haha

I've even tried pratley steel but that also worked off in no time.

The biggest problem is that the locks get hard to operate with age because of dirt. So I normally take them off - wash it in parraffin till no more dirt come out - re-grease and then the handles last nice and long. Also buy the original handles/triggers form VW - they seem to last better. Alll the other type of conversion locks I've seen is even worse than the original.

+1

The Goldwagen handles will last maybe 6 months and then you will need to replace them.

But IIRC the agents want a ridiculous price for a set of OEM ones.

I have put the polo style handles on my 2door and have not had a single problem in 5 years. Also clean your locks regularly as Panic says, it does help a lot.

Ive never had issues with door handles on my mk1s.
Just need maintanence when they start getting hard and sticky remove them some Q20 fit them and off you go again sorted.

It seems to be quite a weird issue because I've had citis for 7 years and also tried the polo copy handles and never had any problems. Even on my new one with security plates underneath they sit at an angle and still no problems.
