Windscreen scratch removal

Post by VW POLOTIC »

As the topic state, is there any way one can remove scratches from a windscreen, other than to replace it???

How deep is the scratch?
If it is just a surface scratch - then getting it out should be easy enough.

Anything but easy to remove...

Pay the excess and have it replaced.

If it is a light scratch that hasn't damaged the window - like a scuff - you can remove it. I have before. But anything more than that - have it replaced.

On the Corsa there was a slight scratch on the windscreen - so I Googled and used this method:

Metal Polish Method

1
Clean the scratch and the area around the scratch with a damp cloth.

2
Wipe the scratch dry using a lint-free towel.

3
Apply metal polish to a soft cloth.

4
Wipe the entire length of the windscreen scratch with the soft cloth, using a back-and-forth motion. Rub the metal polish into the windscreen scratch until it is gone.

5
Repeat this process for other windscreen scratches

But like I say if you can 'feel' the scratch - then you need to replace the windscreen rather.

So it's filling rather than removing then?

It's VERY light scratches, you can only see it clearly when the glass is really clean and the sun glares directly on it. Got it from some serious bird sh%t which I removed with my wind screen wipers! :bang: :bang: :bang:

I think I might just try the "fill" option, as it's very irritating when driving in full-on sun.

Any other suggestions maybe?

If you can feel the scratch - forget it. In most cases, scratches on windscreen = replacement time.

When the windscreen is replaced do they also replace that black dotted plastic film that fits around the edge of the windscreen and behind the rearview mirror?

That is silkscreened onto the glass. So it goes away with the old screen. Decent quality new screen should have it on as well.
