Jetta Mk2 1.8 Carb Vacuum Hose connections

Post by kreevs_tsc »

Hwzt Guys

I have been struggling to get a correct diagram to help me connect up the vacuum hoses for this carb,
I have come across this diagram, but i tried working with it and it seems its for the wrong carb.
does anyone have a diagram of how these hoses are connected? When I do connect stuff up, even to the idle speed control valve, the idle picks up to 1100rpm, and in traffic it went up to 2000rpm!!

I came across this diagram from the haynes manual:

ok that diag is for the Solex carb, you would need the diag for the Keihn carb.
What pipes are not connected or are you not sure about?

Ah, i didnt know what carb it had.

The pipes from the airbox is not connected at all. There is one vacuum hose connection at the back of the carb that is not connected, it is blanked off with a piece of pipe and a screw, and most importantly the idle control valve: this has 3 connections, 2 at the top and one at the bottom, the 2 at the top is connected but the bottom one is left empty i.e sucking the air from the atmosphere. My idle is really jerky at low revs and I am sure that this vacuum pipes are the answer to that problem.

Connect the one from the back of the carb straight to the distributor, disconnect the idle control valve by blocking the vaccum pipe coming from the non return valve to it. check the vacum pipe from the front of the carb goes to the choke vacum.
this is what i did to my dads jetta and it runs fine now.

Also check your baseplate, this causes the idle to increase.

true? my mechanic is my dad's friend, someone whom we trust.
I just noticed that my car, when I start her up in the mornings or if i start her up after a few days, is very rowdy and jerky at low revs.
So i am guessing its the vacuum pipes, because when i connected a pipe from the non return valve to the idle speed control valve, the revs pick up and idles smoothly at 1100rpm

The one behind carb gos to dist and the one from the perminanat vacume gos to the air filter [in pick it runs to dist]
The front one gos to the diaphram on the side for the choke section.

hwzt guys

I still haven't found the right way around to connect this pipes. I did exactly as I was told by the members above ^^ but still havin a hassle.

When i press the accelerator on idle, the car revs dip down, and then pick up again, takes about a second, its a rough dip, and if you really press the accelerator in hard, the car can switch off, it looks like its getting too much of air.

Can anyone recommend a person in Durban i can go and get this connected properly? I am thinking of taking it to VW themselves.
I am sure all these vacuum pipes affect fuel consumption, and previously when you put the aircon on, the car raises the idle, but now with the configuration above ^^ the idle dips alot!!

Remember I apparently have the keihn carb, and there is hardly any info out on the net with regard to this carb.

Thanks
Twisted

sometime the pipes cracks and sucks air... also the diaphragms starts cracking after all the years. but best is let someone check the carb. 1100rpm is a bit high for idling also it needs to be in the area of 950

Sounds more like a carb problem. Maybe float level or the jetting is dirty or wrong.

Hi, could this cause my 1989 mk 2 golf csl 1.6 not to idle. I must keep on revving it, otherwise the car switches off. It feels as if it is not getting petrol.
