After much thought I decided to go with the RNS510 and got a near new one from eBay.uk...The seller came recommended by a VWClub member and it was a pleasure dealing with him...My package [RNS510 Unit version B, GPS antenna, unlock code and manual] arrived on Thursday.

So after more research I realized that this isn't just going to be plug and play for me :( As JohnJM said in his earlier, because of my CanBus module, the unit will work in my car but will drain my battery if i don't change the module. This i confirmed on various forums in both the US and UK. My cars unit is 1K0 907 530 version F and the unit needs atleast a "L" version or later. At my local dealership the "S" version is R3230, sies  Oh, and it also have to be recoded with VagCom :(

 any suggestions as to :
1] Anyone know where I can get a later module for this unit? I saw a new one on eBay.uk for 90 Euro [including shipping] (approx. R950) but the version is AD...will it work on my car? I guess a second hand one will also have to do cause on later Golf5's, post 2008 models, the CanBus modules already fine and don't need updating..so i might get one in a scap yard i guess???
2] If i finally manage to get my hands on one, who can do the VagCom thing for me?
3] Where do I find this CanBus module in the car? some forums say the driver's footwell...anyone ever take out out?

thanks guys

Update: VW Media Device Interface....

Post by Keanublack »

Hey guys, i get many PM's from fellows who want to know where and at what price i got the Unit...

I paid 645 Euro (R6800) including shipping...then I had to pay another R1000 to SARS for customs...total cost was then R7800...

I bought the unit off ebay.uk from a guy in Ireland, his username is "daiman69"

Update:
Media Device Interface:
I got mine in the mail 4 days after I paid for it (great service). This will enable me to connect my iPod to the unit and control the iPod via the Aux option on the unit. I will install it in the glove box on Friday...I'm still waiting for the iPod cable though, seems to be stuck at customs :bang: The Media Device Interface (MDI) offers support for USB devices (memory sticks and hard drives), iPod integration and Aux In along with displaying ID3 tags over the CANbus to the MFD and the RNS510 headunit.
Image

In the end im looking to have something like this & then I can connect my Ipod or memory sticks to it...
Image

Antenna Adapter:
This is to connect the AM & FM cables of the car to the RNS510. The inputs are separate and far apart on my old radio, but in this unit they are close and the cables don't fit...The white end fits into the rear of the unit and the blue to the FM & AM cables.

What sound is that?

Post by Keanublack »

Hi there guys,
I know it's late, but since I'm on call tonight and it's abit quiet, I thought I'd just post this and hope that I will get an answer to this question in the morning sometime: my rns510 unit has been installed and I am very happy with it except for one thing: today I collected my iPod cable from the post office and connected it to my MDI in the glove box, popped my iPod 160Gb classic in and everything is just beautiful. Controlling the iPod from the unit is flawless but when I accelerate the car I hear this background noice that correspond with the cars acceleration thru the speakers...you know, like a ziiiiiing sound.when I switch the unit to play songs off the harddrive, a cd or DVD I don't hear this ziiiiiing sound? What causes that? How do I reg rid of it asap?

Sounds like a grounding issue. Try change the earth wire to another point.

Also check that the wires for the media unit are not too near to main power wires.

thanks,
guys thanks for the advice. one thing is that i am not an electrician so i will need someone to do this for me...does anyone know anyone who can do this for me? im free saterday after 10am or so and i dont mind taking a drive. any recommendations?
Awesum wrote:Cant you buy the MDI interface from VW?
yes, you can buy it from VW...as a matter of fact i went to VW The Glen to find out how much it cost: This is the quotation i got:
VW MDI [Part# 5N0 035 341C] = R3221.98
iPod Cable [Part# 5N0 035 554] = R913.46

I bought the MDI new off ebay.uk for GBP155 (R1700) including shipping (arrived in 5days) and the iPod cable new for GBP25 including shipping (R275) which came out to a total of about R2000. If i bought it from VWSA the bill would have been R4714.40....I saved R2700...VWSA is such a ripoff!! Why are they s expensive?

RNS510 Install: Final Costs

Post by Keanublack »

Hi guys,
Just thought i should write a summary of my modification, how much it cost me and what the things are that i needed:

1: RNS 510 SatNav unit including SatNav Antenna: I bought this unit off ebay.uk from my man “daiman69” from Ireland for Euro 645 (R6800) [including shipping] plus R1000 customs: Total: R7800 VWSA cost R30000

2: CanBus Gateway: You’ve got to have gateway version L or later installed installed in your car or else the RNS510 will drain your battery within 48hours of installation. New, VWSA ask R3230 for the latest version S. You can get a new gateway of ebay.uk for R1000. I got a second hand version L from a scrapyard off a 2008 Audi A3 2.0FSI for R650 and recoded it. It worked!

3: VAG Com: I needed this for recoding the canbus gateway and also fix other errors you might get after installing the RNS510. You can buy it, or get someone to do it for you. I preferred to get my own, so i can do it myself at my own time :)

4: FM/AM Antenna Adapter: My old RCD310 radio had two inputs at the rear for the FM & AM radio respectively that are further apart from each other, different from the RNS510, where they are very close. Because of their close proximity the old inputs can’t fit together on the RNS510 and you’ll need an adapter. If you only add the FM one, you get a error code: "open wire". I couldn’t find this adapter at VWSA, so got one from ebay.uk for AU$35 including shipping (R235)

5: DVD Maps: Got this free from a member on VWClub: Thanks!

6: Media Device Interface & iPod Cable: To connect media devices like USB, iPods, Hard Drives to your RNS510. I got this so i connect my Ipod to it. VWSA again quoted me R3222 & R914 excl VAT for both these giving a total of R4715 incl VAT. I got both these brand new off ebay.uk for R1700 and R275 respectively including shipping, no customs :) I installed it in my glovebox and i’m very happy.
PS: My iPhone 3GS battery went flat today so outa desperation i connected it to the iPod cable and wow! it charged! And amazingly when i press the iPod icon on my phone it reads the phone asif its an ipod, charges it and also plays the tracks on it!!!

Summary (the amounts in brackets is what VW quoted me)
1: RNS510: R7800 [R30000]
2: Canbus: R650 [R3230]
3: Antenna adapter: R235 [couldn’t find any at VW dealership, hey had to enquire from Uitenhage]
4: Maps: R0 [R2500]
5: MDI: R1700 [R3670]
6: iPod Cable: R275 [R1042]

Total: R10660 [R40445]
i had a budget of R10000 and i almost stayed within it...not too bad...one hell of a saving instead of going the VWSA route for a awesum unit...still enjoying it with no regrets hehehehehe

Any idea what gateway version is in a 2007 GTI? If it is indeed L or later will it still need to be recoded?

There are two ways of knowing: 1) take your chassis number to your nearest VW dealership and they can check on their system 2) Use VagCom
When i replaced it i had to recode the new one with everything that was on the old one. If you already have a later version you will still need vagcom because there are a few things you have to change....
