Gearbox oil level and capacity.
Hi guys!
A couple of weeks ago I replaced my speedo cable and now ive realised oil has been leaking from that hole where the speedo cable goes into the box. How do i check the oil level? and if i give the box an oil change, how much oil does it take? its an AUG gearbox originally out of a CTi.
thanx

You need one moerse big allen key socket thing to loosen a big nut on the side of the gearbox! If you get the bolt out, stick your finger inside the hole (dont think naughty now) and you will feel the oil! If the level is level with the hole (allmost coming out) then its fine!
Sorry Im dutch, so my explanation isnt good

Yip. You need a 17mm Allen key to loosen the plug on the side of the gearbox, then fill the gearbox up until the oil starts to drip out the side.
If the gearbox is empty, it will take 2l of gearbox oil to fill.

There should be a rubber seal that goes under the metal plate that holds the speedo cable down.
Replace this seal aswell.

Yip you fill from the hole where the speedo cable goes in, but you leave the plug on the side off so you can see when the box is full.MikeD wrote:you can also fill through the speedo cable opening.

U can use a bolt with a 17mm head, bend it to make a 17mm allen key.
Saves u buying a 17mm allen key

U could just use a second nut, as a lock nut system, no need to tack weld

Ok it will take just less than 2l of oil, but you will need to buy 2l.frog_in_the_fridge wrote:Cool.

U have a choice in oil, but I would recommend,
1. "G005000" oil from VW Agents - +/- R200.00 a L.
2. Castrol bot 130m or castrol SMX - at around R50.00 for 500ml.
