Engine repair / replacement

Post by Bmarx »

I have a 2012 Caddy 2.0 TDI. Last week the car broke down and it turned out the water pump seized, damaging the cam belt. After replacing the belt, water pump and tensioner (costing me R16000!), I am now told by VW that the engine is damaged (valves presumably bent, but full extent of damage not known yet). Quote from VW is R143k. I see on the internet there are places that sell second hand engines for R40-50K, but no idea how trustworthy these are. Any advice or recommendations in this regard? Might as well find a local mechanic that's familiar with tdis and get him to overhaul the cylinder head for u.
It's quite unlikely that the pistons took any significant damage unless you have attempted to forcefully start the engine (especially by push starting).

Maybe just get someone to pull off the head and have a look at the pistons and block, if the pistons are damaged badly then look into an import engine.

I'm in Durban and I have bought a few engines from Mike's Place in cpt. Didn't have any issues with the engines or shipping.

When a car tailgates me, i slow down - then floor it and give them a cloud of diesel smoke to choke on :driving:

Strip and assess then decide based on what you find.
