First of all, a huge thank you to everyone who actually took the time out to come and support their club and be there, even if they couldn't race. It was an absolute pleasure spending the day with like-minded enthusiasts once again - some of whom arrived so early that Redstar management hadn't even opened up yet! :driving:

Despite the loss of a large monetary investment not repaid in entries, we gave out a bunch of cash prizes as promised, but the real fun was behind the wheel - prizes were a distant thought and the weather was beautiful. Coupled with Redstar's brilliant facilities, I'm pleased to announce that despite the turnout being lower than promised, we had a very smooth day with no breakages or incidents on the track.

Thanks to our sponsors for the cash prizes - Karp Performance and Versaflex Insurance Brokers. You guys are awesome and helped us give back to some of the people who went out of their way to support us.

It's not all sunshine and roses though.

With yet another performance event being attended by very few forum and club members, we must think about what place performance events (besides the HillClimb) have in the club as 2020 approaches. Are we really a "stance" club? We don't host any show & shine events, so where are all the drivers at events like RWYB and VKC? We gave the internet what it asked for - performance events, then performance events with timing, yet attendance and participation still isn't so hot.

I propose that we as the people who use this forum think about what we want from the club and submit our requests at the AGM in November.

Maybe next year, we won't lose as much and we can spend more money on events like our free dyno for our members, as we should

With all the above in mind, it must be said that yesterday was once again a resounding success overall with lots of entertainment for drivers and spectators alike and I hope we can do it again soon! :hurray:

Now, bring on #DubRun2k19...

Thanks for an epic day out, even though I couldn't put the new Bae through her paces. Just being with all you guys made the day one to remember. I think this is one thing I treasure about the VWClub boys and girls, there's never a dull moment and we're all just there to have fun. As for the attendance, this is the second year in a row RWYB has run and yet again the club has lost money. Lots of keyboard warriors on here that will propose otherwise, but that AGM would be a great platform to table the performance vs show off issue.

Agreed

I’ve missed the performance orientated events over the last few years simply because my car has been either broken or too stance orientated to participate

I finally got a car worthy of the performance moniker and the events that cater for all the race junkies are the ones that have the worst attendance. Really saddens the heart to see

Seriously unfortunate and I don’t blame the club if they no longer cater towards these types of events if they make losses every time

I was only there for a few hours, but it looked well organised and a good atmosphere.
I enjoy Redstar, but on two wheels, hahahahaha.

My 1.25 cents on the performance events thing: way too many people will spend huge money on engine mods to make massive horsies and torks, suspension, brakes (ie. making a car truly track worthy) and then claim their cars can do 0-200 in milliseconds and klap any car on the roads etc etc but will not partake in properly organised events because:

1. They don't have money
2.They don't want to "damage" their cars.
3. They are keyboard ninjas who cannot back up their claims.

Or all of the above......

Well done Com for a well organised event.

Sad to read about the low turnout for these events. Race events are the fun ones!

I wish I could have attended but being self employed and living far away it is very difficult. But there are so many JHB members that I feel it should be a breeze to drive to an event around the corner. And then enjoy the car that you built. Safely. And what it was meant to do.

Strongs Comm! Hope the Hillclimb event has an epic turnout.

So I attended last year, and sadly I expected the turnout to be the same. Poor.

I wait for the club drag events but when it costs you around 1k (and that's on my car) Just to get there and enter, it is expected that the turn will be minimal.
Yes hiring the track and equipment is expensive, that we know, and of course the club needs to at least cover up costs.

Personally here is what I see.

Pros:
1. It's not ODI thank goodness it isn't
2. Enough space to park and lekker facilities
3. It's easy to get to, just 1 straight road
4. It's safe

Cons:
1. Its Purse far
2. It costs a lot to enter (Nope I'm not a member anymore, so 100 Bucks extra)
3. its very far from home if you were to breakdown
4. The caliber of cars that are there are way out of my league to race
5. It's not worth a drive just to spectate, and if I were to race refer to point 4
6. It's in the fasting month, it's moer hot in the sun
7. R1000 just to get there, race and get back home is expensive for a lot of us
8. I attended last year and I got bored

With all the drag events happening around, the new Drag clubs that have popped up and the new big chiefs setting up major race days, this could have definitely been much bigger and pull a proper crowd and entrants. I'm not sure if this was given the hyper it needed like our old events from lets say 2015. Yay nice, a poster and an event on Facebook, but really not enough to get it out there (maybe I'm mistaken, and I've missed it, If so I accept I am wrong)

I look at all the different "Race crews" which have popped up, their events are huge. Its grudge match haven, it's exciting and people go to support, also it isn't overpopulated with with new cars, there's some real old school tech and tune that is live and well, apart from the boring GTR's and high end cars.

Another thing that keeps me away is that's gone boring. No disrespect to the guys or anything, but I much rather watch a Ford Escort which was BUILT and tuned by some oomie on his front lawn then a factory car which went to XX workshop, bolted on shinny bits and a computer file and now reigns supreme. Perhaps I'm old school that way, but even just to spectate. Watching all the new cars, which look the same and sound the same is a waste of time for me personally. But that's personal opinion, and that's why I don't attend.

So should this event get canned?
I don't know, but it seems like it will be

Something we must perhaps look at?
I remember a few years back, we had an event at the rock. 200m headsup, that was fun, the smaller guys got a chance to play a bit too and it was also closer and way way cheaper.

Thanks for the messages of support. It's not set in stone or even a likelihood (yet) that events like these will be cancelled. Without constructive suggestions at our AGM though, it may go that way...

The committee handles social media marketing. We don't spend additional money on other forms of advertising.

With regards to the costs, we didn't cover even half of them and wouldn't have done so even with 100 members entering. Why did we do it then? Because it was asked for - and it was advertised for the past week or so that costs to the racer would be R400 across the board, whether one is a member or not, in an effort to entice those who promised to enter but had not.

Now please take my responses to these points as a general response. They are not intended to cause offence to you specifically but are here to respond to many people who I fear share your thoughts.

Cons:
Distance - I guess that depends on your definition of "far".
Cost - even at R550 a racer, it's the cheapest timed drag event besides a Friday night at Tarlton.
Caliber of cars out of your league - no offence, but how do you know if you don't pitch? Also, if that's your rationale, maybe there are others like you and everyone assuming they won't be competitive leads to no one signing up. Maybe if you had signed up, a few more people with similar rides would have followed suit?
Not worth the drive to spectate - Okay.
It's hot in the sun and you're drained of energy - Sure, I agree. So come to an AGM as a member and request that the date moves - or bring a gazebo / umbrella / watch from your car.
Cost again - It's as cheap as possible, and would be cheaper still if we knew for certain that more people would attend. Also, if you consider how many runs you get for your entry, it's well worth three trips to Tarlton.
You got bored last year - maybe drag racing isn't for you lol :troll: but in all seriousness, that is more down to low entries. Seeing the same cars race again and again can be boring but these events are put on more for the drivers than for the spectators, and knowing we wouldn't have a huge turnout meant that we felt it would be rude to charge spectators to possibly watch only 10 cars race. The more support we get from our forum and club members, the more racers will show up and the more exciting the racing will be for the spectator.

It's a difficult situation to be in, both as the club and as a member thereof. We must give the people what they ask for and the spectators and racers must also get value for their time and money. It's a sad and chilling thought to imagine canning an event that everyone who attends seems to have a blast at, including 99% of spectators that we spoke to, but we have to consider it as a possibility if we don't get more support.

So please take a look at what the event is like currently, what you and your friends have to say about making it better, and let's make a decision on how to improve at the AGM...

In other news, pics and times should be up this evening or tomorrow - depending on when we receive the full timing sheets from Truvelo :hi:

I attended just to spectate. I've never been to the venue before, It was a far drive (100km one way) but it was worth it. The facilities were really good, clean bathrooms, food and drinks available. R400 is a bargain and I am sure you'd get in a lot more runs at an event like this than a Friday night. If my car was race ready, I definitely would have been on the track. I look forward to the next event.

I missed that, but still a bit heavy for my pocket, taking fuel into consideration

Cons:
Distance - I guess that depends on your definition of "far".
Anything Over 45 mins is far, but fortunately its and easy road

Cost - even at R550 a racer, it's the cheapest timed drag event besides a Friday night at Tarlton.
True, but also doesn't require as much fuel to get there and back

Caliber of cars out of your league - no offence, but how do you know if you don't pitch?
Because I phoned someone who was there and was told, it's the same as last year.

Also, if that's your rationale, maybe there are others like you and everyone assuming they won't be competitive leads to no one signing up. Maybe if you had signed up, a few more people with similar rides would have followed suit?
Nope.

Not worth the drive to spectate - Okay.

It's not that easy bud. Any other time I don't mind the sun and dehydration at an event
As for coming to the AGM, been there before your time, consensus has always been and I doubt it will ever change (because a few guys are fasting , we cant change the date, so ya not happening)

Cost again - It's as cheap as possible, and would be cheaper still if we knew for certain that more people would attend. Also, if you consider how many runs you get for your entry, it's well worth three trips to Tarlton.
Yip correct

You got bored last year - maybe drag racing isn't for you lol :troll: but in all seriousness, that is more down to low entries. I'll narrow it down to old school racing is my thing, All the new cars are not as fun to watch or even compete with

This is something the club needs make peace with, old the old guys who wanted performance events have gotten busy and life took its course. Or they outgrew the club and find fuel for their passion elsewhere. The culture years back was alot different to now, before it was about being fast. Now its about building show cars, sitting with a hubbly and talking kak with mates. You know for a fact those events pull the numbers. Look at the night runs, or MCGS etc.

How many of the old performance orientated guys still log on? Not much. Tuners and their and their best customers who become family are those who attend the performance events if you think about it. Also many years ago before new people joined the forum and got butthurt by everything, this forum was busy and people were excited to attend events to carry the childishness through to events. Now it's just become another technical forum, which a lot of the guys wanted, because they couldn't handle being roasted  That being said, that bunch from 2004 - 2015 were very performance orientated, even though the events were smaller., and on the same note these are the same guys who have families now and have outgrown the club

So please take a look at what the event is like currently, what you and your friends have to say about making it better, and let's make a decision on how to improve at the AGM...

In other news, pics and times should be up this evening or tomorrow - depending on when we receive the full timing sheets from Truvelo :hi:
I love this club, my best friends I've met because of this club. I know 1st hand the effort it takes to get events off the ground, the time and all the preps. You will never keep everyone happy, and sadly the guys asking for performance events are the busy ones who forget they asked and end up missing the events. But I dont see why this needs to be canned, its a needed event, I have no idea why others wouldnt attend. But you have my reasons.
Yip I still got my 1.4 Citi

With regards to the costs, we didn't cover even half of them and wouldn't have done so even with 100 members entering. Why did we do it then? Because it was asked for - and it was advertised for the past week or so that costs to the racer would be R400 across the board, whether one is a member or not, in an effort to entice those who promised to enter but had not.

I missed that, but still a bit heavy for my pocket, taking fuel into consideration

Now please take my responses to these points as a general response. They are not intended to cause offence to you specifically but are here to respond to many people who I fear share your thoughts.

Cons:
Distance - I guess that depends on your definition of "far".
Anything Over 45 mins is far, but fortunately its and easy road

Cost - even at R550 a racer, it's the cheapest timed drag event besides a Friday night at Tarlton.
True, but also doesn't require as much fuel to get there and back

So basically the complaint about distance stems from where you are based, rather than the actual distance from JHB centre. I personally use a lot more fuel going to Tarlton because of the traffic, traffic lights, speed limit, and poor road surface - even though I'm closer to Tarlton than Redstar.

Caliber of cars out of your league - no offence, but how do you know if you don't pitch?
Because I phoned someone who was there and was told, it's the same as last year.
That's unfortunate and inaccurate. There were at least three cars I can think of that would have been lashed by your Citi
:driving:
Also, if that's your rationale, maybe there are others like you and everyone assuming they won't be competitive leads to no one signing up. Maybe if you had signed up, a few more people with similar rides would have followed suit?
Nope.
How do you know?

Not worth the drive to spectate - Okay.

It's hot in the sun and you're drained of energy - Sure, I agree. So come to an AGM as a member and request that the date moves - or bring a gazebo / umbrella / watch from your car.
It's not that easy bud. Any other time I don't mind the sun and dehydration at an event
As for coming to the AGM, been there before your time, consensus has always been and I doubt it will ever change (because a few guys are fasting , we cant change the date, so ya not happening)

That's why I suggested voting on a date change.
Actually, I remember you specifically bringing up the issue of date a number of times - with regards to DubRun - and as I have suggested, previous people occupying the role of chair and vice repeatedly urged you and others with similar thoughts to come to the AGM to at least table it and then vote (as we do every year) on the date of various events. Yet, you weren't there and nor was anyone else with similar sentiments. Or, if I somehow missed it, you were there once and then didn't try again...
:bang:

Again, this is not a personal attack - but it does speak to the bigger problem here: people online want things to change to suit their needs but get disappointed at the result of every year's AGM (or even other events) despite not attending... So again I beg, please come to the AGM and have your say. It would be refreshing to actually hear it in person and let democracy decide what the next year brings. :deadhorse:

Cost again - It's as cheap as possible, and would be cheaper still if we knew for certain that more people would attend. Also, if you consider how many runs you get for your entry, it's well worth three trips to Tarlton.
Yip correct

You got bored last year - maybe drag racing isn't for you lol :troll: but in all seriousness, that is more down to low entries.
I'll narrow it down to old school racing is my thing, All the new cars are not as fun to watch or even compete with
I agree 100%. Now if you were there, you'd have seen an old Audi S2 do some ridiculous runs, an old turbocharged home-built Beetle lay some beatings down on much newer metal, an N/A Honda and N/A Citi on throttles compete against a home built 16VT Citi and a pair of Polo TDi's and more... :hi:

Agreed here too. The forum has changed into what many wanted it to and now that it's happened, many of the same people miss what they so despised. Yes, families have taken over the lives of many, but we're falling back into the same debate that has roared on for the past three or four years, one that should be saved for the AGM where it makes a difference to the outcome of the provisional calendar. This is why attendance at the AGM is important - but only if you actually care about what happens to this club.

No, we won't keep everyone happy - that's impossible - but I urge the disgruntled, the indifferent, and those that love this club to make their voices heard come November.

Hopefully, the same passion that is put into you and me discussing our opinions over a keyboard can be put into something constructive and the debate over how to save these performance events will be fruitful.

Event was awesome! Really enjoyed myself, this also being my first performance event. I learned a lot, saw a lot and met some new people. Even though I potentially walked away with a broken(ish) car, it still runs, still made 4 passes after it started acting up. Will I do/attend again? Hell yeah! Next time with a hopefully, slightly faster car..  . Also love the event, facilities were awesome, clean and well catered for.
