Hi Dawie,

I fitted Mudflaps onto mine on Sunday afternoon, a breeze to fit and i must say they make a nice edition to the car, mine that has the 18" Austins and the mudflaps makes the car look totally different now

And yes Vanesh i only fitted it on Sunday so i'll send you a pic, just need to fit the tail pieces now and fit the Pedal set and then i'm done, only 7 months after purchase, i know it took some time but it's done now.

Hi Guys...

I'm new to the forum, I need some advice. I currently drive a Polo R6 1.6 comfortline. I use my car for personal use as well as business use. I average around 3300km monthly which consists mostly of short sprints in and around KZN. I do the odd "long distance" trip maybe once a month of around 200km. My dilemma is my fuel bill, I'm averaging 9.0L / 100km.

After doing some research I decided to change my car to the golf 7 1.4 TSI DSG comfortline, I ordered the following specs as extra's
Leather
Sunroof
Media composition
High beam

According to my research the car's average fuel consumption is 5.2 L / 100km however given that my polo states 6.9 L / 100km I'm assuming it's not an accurate indication of fuel consumption. When I arrived at Alpine Vw to sign my OTP, I ask the sales rep for some advice and was advised not to change from the polo to the TSI as consumption will be around the same? Instead I should opt for the 2.0 TDI 81 KW variant. I test drove the car and was not as satisfied as compared to the TSI. *first time driving a diesel*

Please could you advise me of the following;

TSI - mileage range per a full tank with mixed driving conditions
TDI - mileage range per a full tank with mixed driving conditions

Ps. I'm getting both at the same price however the TDI will exclude the sunroof but include balance of extra's
Main aim is to reduce my fuel bill on a monthly basis even though car will cost a bit more than the polo rather drive the G7 with lower fuel costs and add the extra cash towards a slightly higher repayment

Are you buying a new car to save fuel/money? Because I doubt you'll save money purely by buying a new car. 9l/100 is probably the norm if you do short sprints (where the 6R Polo is quite at home), and I doubt a new car will be a lot different, especially the heavier Golf.

Then, if you're not satisfied with how the TDI drives, then will you be happy if you buy a TDI instead of the TSI? TDI is more of a cruiser in my opinion.

My long term consumption for my TDI is at 4.6-4.7l/100, buy some say I have an atypical way of driving and/or route.

The intent behind the change is to save on fuel costs , I get a kick back of 3.24c per every business km that I travel, I calculated that if I change to a more fuel economical car, I can either break even on monthly expenditure on a vehicle or increase my overall car cost by a few hundred but in a much better vehicle. I technically don't want to save any money but rather spend the same amount of cash monthly including fuel costs on a better vehicle



I think I just answered my own question.....the only way to achieve my goal will be in a TDI.

I've never owned a diesel before so forgive me for the 100 questions;
Is your fuel consumption average, or only if you are driving within specific conditions?
Are there any facts of a diesel that I should be aware of ito maintenance?
Did you personally encounter any issues with your TDI?

i have the tsi comfortline and i average 7l/100km.
the tdi's you will probably get about 6l/100km

TDI is extremely easy to drive, and should be easier than the petrol. Short first gear. With mine I can almost just let the clutch out slowly.

Yes, on average. I am however used to driving a TDI (which you don't have to rev alot), so I'm probably more used to driving economical. And I generally do +-20km or longer trips.

No. Only use 50 ppm diesel.

Did you personally encounter any issues with your TDI?

None specific to TDI.

Just beware that the Golf 7 TDI (as far as I can see) isn't really represented on Fuelly. Those 2014 models are G6 in the US. The two GTD models are performance models.

I also moved from a petrol to a diesel and have stalled a couple of times myself, but think it's coz I'm not completely used to diesel driving yet, but getting there

I spoke to my old mechanic about working/maintenance on diesel and how they differ from petrol cars. He had a guy with a Tiguan in (which has the same engine apparently) that needed to replace the particulate filter which costs a ton. He said it's good to do a long trip (30min+ open road) every two weeks or so to get the engine and exhaust burning hot to avoid having these issues. (I may be wrong here, diesel-noob here)

Yip, but this is beneficial for most cars. On the TDI models with a particulate filter this helps to heat up the filter to a high enough temperature to burn of the accumulated soot.

I drive a 1.4TSi DSG. My current mileage is now 20000KM.

I drive from Ballito to Mount Edgecombe daily with a few stop -start and also traffic. Aircon is on Auto all the time.

I average around 6.2L/100Km from Ballito to Mount edgecombe and around 5.4L/100Km from Mount edgecombe to Ballito.

Driving speed varies from 100 to 140Km/h.

On a tank- not sure if it is full as I only fill up till first click- I get around 700KM

Decided to take the factory fitted leather instead of the after market....and guess what no stock in SA if an order is placed now, i can get it in June / July or opt for the after market leather

yup that seems to be the problem with the multiple 'option' theory of car sales.
there are so many combinations thats its highly unlikely anyone will actually find one of exactly what they want.
result is they pretty much have to build each car to order hence the 3 months :-/
