MK2 Jetta CLI front end part numbers / prices

Post by J-GTI »

Howzit folks,

I've got my hands on a mk2 jetta cli that needs some work, but I won't be back in SA till early-mid next year so I'l wondering if anyone could help me out with either some part numbers or prices.

What I need is the two headlights, grille and the flont panel (slam panel), anyone have any ideas on part numbers and prices?

Will see if I can give lindsay saker in bloem a call soon but thought I'd ask here in the mean time

I'm trying to get all the parts collected so when I get back I can get straight into getting it back together.

Cheers

What year model?

The '91 and '92 models had the facelift bumpers with the Rallye headlights. The slam panel is also different.

A lot of the stuff for the MkII's aren't available from the dealers anymore. I'm going through a lot of pain with mine right now.

Not sure exactly where you are, but if you're anywhere near Europe/UK, try to get as much of the stuff there before you come back.

I'll se if I can get you some part numbers.

The old style headlight numbers are:
166 941 017 B
165 941 018

The slam panel is:
165 805 591

These numbers might have been superceded by newer numbers, but it's at least a starting point.

Can't find much on the Rallye stuff. Can only get the numbers for the headlights, but they're the LHD versions and these are not availabe from the dealers anymore.

It's a '92 it's the rallye front I'm after, I'm in Ireland so I'll be looking at bringing back anything I can but the rallye set up is no longer available here.

I was told by my uncle that collected the car for me that I should be able to get it from vw SA.

The slam tray and bumper are the same as on all other Jetta MK2's, only the 2.0 8v and 2.0 16v CLi's got the rallye front ends. And even then the only difference is the head lights themselves and the grill. The grill and lights you can both get from Autostyle (http://www.autostyle.co.za/product/2038 ... htclitype/ and http://www.autostyle.co.za/product/4168 ... lleCliStd/), the only trick with the 'Chinese' type lights is the driving light section (looks like a xenon light). If the one ones in your current lights are still okay you can just transfer them into the new light unit, if not then don't even bother, just fit the normal Jetta lights. I priced new ones when I still had mine and they were over R2500 each. Luckily I was able to repair mine and transfer them into the new lights.

Common misconception...

In '91 VW did the facelift on the CLi and introduced the 2.0 16V, but the 8V remained a 1.8. In '92 the 8V became the 2.0 Digifant. My dad bought a brand new MkII CLi 8V in August '91 and it's a facelift 1.8 (EV engine). I bought the car from him in 2000 and it's been in my garage since.

What has really baffled me for the last 20 years, was why VW introduced the CSi in '91. It was identical to the CLi, but with the old style front end. In '92 the CSi remained a 1.8, so there was a differentiation, but I could never figure out why they had the CLi and CSi with the same motor for one year. The only explanation I could fathom, was that they WANTED to introduce 2.0 8V in '91, but for some reason it wasn't quite ready yet.

I'm not 100% sure about the slam panel. I've never inspected the old style one in detail, but I'm pretty sure the bigger lights will NOT fit into a Rallye panel. The aperture where the light fits looks to small to me, but I might be wrong.

The Rallye lights' illumination was notoriously crap. A lot of people changed the lights for Golf units, not only because of the cost of the Rallye units, but the Golf lights were far superior. The "Pirate" Autostyle ones were even worse!!

The other problem you're sitting with, is that the dipped beam globe is an H2 type! This was the only car I've ever seen to use an H2. The last time I needed globes, I could only get them from VW, and they don't stock them anymore now.

I was thinking of installing an HID kit in mine. This will fix two problems in one go.

The other option you might want to investigate is to get a set of Corrado headlights. There was a company in the UK (can't remember the name, something like C&R Auto) who had some really nice aftermarket units for the Corrado. I've seen pictures of an original Rallye Golf in the UK that had a set of Corrado lights fitted and you'd be hard pressed to tell the difference.

IMHO this front end is, even after 20 years, still one of the best looks on any VW, but if memory serves, they built only 5000 original Rallyes and they were all LHD, and AFAIK, SA was the only other country in the world where the Rallye headlights were used and they were set-up for RHD, so that makes the original Hella units, hens-teeth.

Have to agree , I just love the look of the Jetta with the Ralley front.

PS my mom had a Red 1.8 8V CLI '92 with the big bumpers and ralley front. If I go and dig I sould be able to get a photo of it. Thats where my love for all things VW started.. with that car. Loved it !

I have the original headlights but id preffer new parts, after what ive spent on the rest of the car buying genuine new parts there's no point in turning back now or buying copies.
Put it this way, if I can get the parts I don't care what they cost.

I have contacts in vw classic parts but they can't get me VWSA parts. If anyone is after European parts though let me know and I'll help you out.

Yup and my dad had a 1.8 8v (K-Jet), MK2 GTi with big bumpers standard. But I was under the impression that only the 2.0 Jetta's got the narrow light front ends (Rallye).
My '92 Jetta was a 2.0 8v on Digifant, and still remains the best car I've owned

Hang on a minute, are you talking about he little piece of sprung wire that holds the globe in the light?
If that's what you're talking about then that's a little more difficult. I managed to get a piece of some fancy stuff from my dad (works at SAA), not sure what it was, I replaced all the electrical wire in my lights with automotive stuff and fitted relays to the lights and it made a huge improvement to the lights, but they were still far from great.

The MK2 CLi Jetta is a brilliant car! Good power and such a pleasure to drive.
Was the '90 till '92 16V CLi motors all K-Jet fueled system or did they ever become electronic fuel injected?

Interestingly enough the 2.0 16 valve motor had a timing ECU, but only for the ignition timing and rev limiter.
