Not sure with the polo, but I know in the mk3 golf if u open the boot and pull the carpeting away from the side behind the petrol flap you can get to the lock and open it manually.

I also have the same problem sometimes with my Polo. What I do is remove the key from the ignition & press the unlock button on the remote & the fuel cap usually opens then.

Try this. I know the first time this happened I was scared as I was in a dodgy area in the middle of the night.

tried that many times boet, didnt budge.

manage to get it opened by knocking around the flap. Now that its open i can see that the locking pin isnt working all the time. ie: when i lock or unlock the pin is sometimes stuck. will open it up w.end and have a look.

Cool. Let us know if this fixes the problem. Maybe I have to do the same.

If you have the cars owner manual, have a look in there. I got the info for the mk3 while reading through its manual a little while back. So I'm sure the polo's manual will also have an explanation.

Remove r/r boot carpet.
You will see motor use screw driver to push the pin back and flap will open.
Replace motor as it is fualty.[can open and clean/lube but won't work for long]

This just happened to me this morning. Went to fill juice and the flap didnt wanna open.
Took the risk of driving to work on my reserve tank.
Got in and called vw, spoke to morne and he explained to me what to do in the boot.
Not sure wtf I was doing and i still couldnt get it open.

Then something strange happened. I unlocked the doors from the passenger side and what do you know, the damn thing opens!!!
Now about 2 days ago i locked the car from the passenger as i was standing there anyway. Think this might have something to do with it?

No it's got nothing to do with it... pure coincedense!

These little locks tend to get sticky so sometimes they open and other times they are stubborn. They are also quite difficult to see when you move the carpet out of the way, get in there with a torch and you should see it just below the hight of the parcel shelf.

Stick your head into the boot, use a flashlight. The white thingy at the end of the blue arrow in the picture below must be moved up to open the flap...
