9N Rear Brake pad change
Right, so I need to do the rear pads and possibly the rear discs aswell.
I know that I can use a g-clamp and a pair of circlip pliers to turn the rear piston back into the caliper, so that part shouldn't be a problem.
Just wanted to find out if there are any other hassles I should be aware of before I yank everything off on Sunday morning?
Any advise welcome.
TIA

I remember reading that you need a special tool as the g clamp doesnt allow you to rotate the piston?

Re: 9N Rear Brake pad change
The 9N Haynes manual reckons you turn the piston while the g-clamp is being tightened, it's a two person job using that method. I know some of the challenge guys also use this method to do their rear brakes.dood786 wrote:I remember reading that you need a special tool as the g clamp doesnt allow you to rotate the piston?

Oh come on now, at least give it a go for yourself.
You might have a better technique than I had when I tried.
The worst that can happen is you fail and have to tighten it back on…
Try it!

Right, giving it a bash on Sunday morning with a mate. He's a Merc mechanic and has the tool I need to turn the piston in on the rear calipers, great success!

Re: 9N Rear Brake pad change
Right, so the rear discs were fine, we only changed the pads. Whole job took no more than 30 minutes and no "special tool" was required to get the job done. Just a pair of water pump pliers and a socket extension bar
Gonna take the discs back to GW for a credit
Great success!

Re: 9N Rear Brake pad change
Most socket wrenches have a long and a short extension that you connect to the socket wrench and then connect the socket onto. You'll obviously use the long extension for this job
So basically, once you've removed the lower bolt of the caliper and brake pads. You slide the extension through the caliper and push it up against the piston, then, using the water pump pliers you'll turn the piston while pushing against it with the extension bar. So simple and quick, yo9u could do it by yourself

Re: 9N Rear Brake pad change
Turn clockwise for the piston to go down and anti clockwise to turn up - I used a long nose pliers and held the caliper against the shock however had to remove the HB cable from the caliper
If you do struggle , open bleeder valve and piston will easily turn however a full bleed will need to be done afterwards.

Or simply buy the correct rewind tool. Most decent spares shops stock them or take it somewhere which has the rewind tool.

Re: 9N Rear Brake pad change
+1 what panic said if you can find one, I struggled trying to find the tool and when I did , shops wanted an arm and a leg
Resorted to the mentioned method above and worked for me although would've be way easier if I had the tool
NOTE:
by trying to force the rear caliper piston(w/handbrake) down with a g clamp without turning the piston will damage it.
You a use the g clamp to push down on the front calipers.
Be careful that you don't damaged the piston rubber boot

Re: 9N Rear Brake pad change
Thanks Howie , half the price of what they asking in the southern suburbs, rather that than having the pliers slip and ending up with a bigger problem.Howie-WP wrote: ↑Wed Apr 17, 2019 11:19 amAdendorff has them for R350..... https://www.adendorff.co.za/product/mac ... back-tool/

Re: 9N Rear Brake pad change
Something else to bear in mind...
If you have the pads and don't want to get dirty, pop over to your closest Supa-Quick, they will sort you out for a reasonable fee.
I learnt the painful and frustrating way, and ended up buying the 21 piece kit, now its a breeze.
