Mk3 Rubber Beading under Windscreen

Post by GolfMad »

I am not sure if this should not maybe be posted under the wanted section, but first I need a bit of advice.

The Golf Mk3 has a plastic cover below the windscreen, which covers the ECU and the wiper motors etc. There are two covers, one covers about half the width of the car on the one side and same with the other cover. They have rubber beadings that seals it off agianst the windscreen. Now, mine is moeg, the rubber is torn and basically worn out. (old age I suspect)

Can I replace the rubber only, or must I buy a whole new plastic cover with new rubber ? and if so where can I get it?

Hi

To the best of my knowledge and accoridng to my mac you have to buy the whole thing from vw as the rubber is attached to the plastic part as well.

Off topic but if you get a price from VW please let me know as well.

As stated above, it has to be bought as a complete unit. Only place I found it was at VW. But wait, it gets better! They want a ridiculous R750 PER SIDE! Thats R1500 for the plastic rain cover. And that was quoted to me about a year back, so its probably gone up. What I suggest you do, and what I'm planning to do is cut off the rubber section and just seal it with silicone. Thats what was done on my friends vr6 and it looks decent.

Not really, the car is almost out of production for like 10years, the older stuff is normally more expensive as demand drops and they still have to keep it in the warehouse....

Or they could sell it at a more reasonable price, thus getting more people to buy the stuff, which in turn means it doesn't need to occupy warehouse space for so long. ;-)

I agree - and they might just gain even more clients thus selling more cars thus not going bankrupt like GM :D

Just incase someone stumbles on this years later, you can find these rubber seals locally manufactured from a company called ProAuto Rubber

My DIY rubber is still good on my mk3. Does this forum still not handle images easily.. ..
It won't help for my purpose though. Imagine trying to convince a GW sales tard you need a part without a vin number that does not match my vehicle.. Story of my life

These pics just reminded me, I need to get replacement plastic screws for my rain tray cowl. Must maybe try Wurth.

That rubber is a normal body/door seal rubber, has a metal strip in the bottom that gives it some rigidity. I'll post pics tonight.

Can easily get them at Pro Auto Rubber.
