Citi Golf carb not starting

Post by YvonneCiti1400 »

Hello evrybody,
My name is Yvonne and this is my first post.
I hope that somebody can help me with my problem.
I have a 2009 Citi Golf 1400 cardurettor car.
My husband drilled a hole to remove my ignition lock barrel to fit a new one for me. At the same time he unplugged the ignition switch. He also removed the instrument cluster and the wiper and indicator switches for cleaning. All of this was done without disconnecting the battery.
He reassembled it all and now the car will crank on the key but it will not start.
There is a yellow light on the instrument panel with a key picture on it and this is flashing. I have never seen this light before and I don't know what it means. The car has a shurlok box fixed just above the accelerator pedal. It also has a big black metal box fixed behind the cubby hole. We don't know what these boxes are for. It also has a transponder ring around the part where you put the key in.
Everything works except the indicators do not show a flashing light on the dashboard but they are working on the outside and the choke light doesn't show on the dash any more.
Is there anybody who can give us an idea on what might be wrong or the mistakes that we have made and we should doto try and fix this?
Please help if you can.
Thank you everybody.

So the battery really should be disconnected when working on the electronics of any car.

That aside, is the transponder ring connected to the control box?
Have you checked if the spare key starts the car?
Whats the condition of the battery itself, have you measured the current voltage with a multi-meter?
Have you checked that the fuses are good?

Sounds like there are a whole bunch of things not correctly reconnected. Maybe reseat all the connections again.

Also try disconnect the battery for an hour and then reconnect and leave the transponder key in the ignition barrel for a while.

Hello Yvonne

What has happened is your immobilizer system is active and preventing the car from starting.

Your husband/mechanic needs to retrace his steps and check which connector he has left unplugged. Secondly have a good look at the new key. Is it a *transponder* key the same as the original one? The right one will be hollow or have a spot that the chip can be installed.

Try this to confirm if everything else works, hold the old key as close to the ignition barrel as possible and see if the car starts. You will have to hold the old key against the new key while turning the ignition to start the car. If this works then you simply have a key problem

It's is probable that the new lock came with normal keys that are not fitted with a transponder chip, but even if the new keys have chips they still need to be programmed to the car in order to disengage the immobilizer and allow the car to start.

This means a trip to the locksmith or worst case scenario to the dealers. Most locksmiths should be able to sort it out though. Call you closest one and ask.

Hello Missioner,
Thank you for replying to me.
When my husband removed the ignition lock barrel he found that all it needed was oiling and then it worked fine again so I still have the original keys and lock, He also tried my spare keys and that one didn't work either.
He is going to check all the plugs again so thank you for that.
I will post again if we have any success.

Hello EX-DOHCTOR
Thank you for the reply
I have shown my husband your reply and he tells me the following:
He says that he is an idiot for not disconnection the battery. He didn't know that the car had a transponder immobilizer.
He says that the wires from the transponder ring go into the harness and can't be disconnected.
The spare key also does not work now.
The battery is only 4 months old and if fully charged. The voltage at the battery is 12.7 volts after it has stood for a couple of hours without the charger connected. Is that OK?
He has checked all the fuses with hi meter and found them all to be fine.
He disconnected the battery overnight and it didn't help.
He left the key in the accessories position for several hours and it made no difference.
He then left the key in turned on for an hour and that didn't help either.
He says that he is going to check all the plugs again to make sure that the are all connected properly and that he didn't miss any.
Thank you Missioner and EX-DOHCTOR for your help so far,
Kind regards

Don't be too hard on yourselves. Mistakes do happen

I can only assume that back tracing the steps and confirming all the plugs and leads are properly and firmly connected will resolve this.

Just as a side comment, 12.7V on a rested battery (off the charger for a few hours) is a very good voltage, yes. So the battery should not be a part of your troubles.

Hi everybody,
So all the plug connections have been checked and no problem found. So it looks like it was all assembled correctly. I called a local VW agent and they tell me that the Shurlok box has to be replaced and programmed to the car so on Monday my car is being towed there for this work to be done. It looks like several thousand rands is going to change hands now so it looks like my Christmas present for this year just went out of the window. Oh well at least I will have my little car back soon.
Thanks to everybody for their helpful suggestions. It's really good that there is a forum like this that we can come to and ask all of our questions.
Kind regards to all.
