Hi There. Hope someone can assist.
I have a 1993 Golf 3 GSX and a coolant pipe started leaking, so I removed it. As I was removing it, the "port" (not sure of thats what its called) where its connected to the manifold came off. Its rusted through. You can see the images, I have circled where the pipe connects to. The arrow points to the port on the manifold that rusted off. The 3rd pic is of the part that used to be connected to the manifold.
Is it possible to repair this "port" and what is its correct name so I know what to search for.
Any suggestions on how to replace or repair this would be welcome, or of someone in cape town that has experience in fixing this.

That part is normally a press fit nipple that comes as part of the inlet manifold. Only two options you have would be to either tap that hole and screw in a brass nipple and reconnect that water hose or replace with another manifold.
Use anti-freeze in motor to prevent rusting of the steel water pipes.

Can you tell if my issue is the same as whats being discussed in this thread?

If it is the same I would consider blocking it off as well. I would appreciate any assistance.

Pretty much the same problem. Though the little Welsh plugs are usually more prone to failing.OmNomNom wrote:Thanks.

I have this 1/8 Male to 10mm hosetail that I got a at gas place. Would this be suitable as a replacement nipple?
If the one I have is not good, there is also this GAV Hose Adaptor With 1/8 Male X 10mm Hose Tail on takealot. Would that work?
https://www.takealot.com/gav-hose-adapt ... ID52951181.
Also which tap would I need to use? There are two which seem similar
A m10-x-1.25 tap or a 1/8-x-28-bsp tap?

Get the manifold off the motor and remove the offending rusty bits. Probably a good time to do the Welsh plugs while you are there.
If memory serves the openings for the water parts an Welsh plugs are around 16mm ID, so I would not pull the trigger on those fittings till you know what you are dealing with.
As far as taps go, the size will be determined by which fitting gets installed, best option for a water tight seal would be NPT threads. They taper and self seal to some extent as they get tight. For best results PTFE tape or thread sealant should be used.
When I built my golf motor a few years back, I made my own plugs for the inlet out of big bolts. The result was good with thick plugs that will never rust through in the life of the motor.
