Morning all

So I’ve been half looking out for a GT. Seen a lot of modified 2-doors, but I’m looking for something more stock GT.

This one has popped up, assuming it's still available after this post:
- So what sort of pricing would be fair?
- Is there anything I should look out for? What are common rust areas apart from the ones in the pictures?
- What engine is that? The ad just says it’s a 2l
- Looks like a few bits missing - accelerator pedal and front spoiler for starters. Also mine had a wolfsburg wheel, not sure if that was standard.
- Any other comments appreciated! :hug:

Looks like a 2E 2L converted to carb. Looks like there might've been a fire in the engine bay at some point.

Are they fishing for offers or do they have a figure in mind.

Lotsa work to do there.

They want R70k, which seemed way too high to me.
I missed the carb completely- I wonder how long it’s been driving around without an air box.

70k? In that condition? And they are being serious?

Why not just buy my red one for 300k and finish it to your liking?

I wouldn't pay R70k, it is a bit too scrappy and unoriginal for me at that price point.

Gutter rust is a bi-atch to fix properly, and that rust around the bottom windshield is also a bit of a concern. Nothing seems too far to fix though.
I wouldn't pay more than 20k as it stands now.

Having said that, if you're willing to spend 70k to buy the car then I look forward to the restore thread.

At that price i have seen better.The vintage car group on FB is a good place to look.

Fully agree with EX-DOHCTOR about the rust areas. Other areas of concern to look for rust is in the boot area, rear boot lock and in corners of boot from above rear lights all the way down to under the carpet, Check rear arch lower back corners for any filler below bumper line especially since the black plastic fender arches are fitted, check under body in the areas where the lower control arms bolt down to the body and the jack points behind the front wheels, check brackets on lower firewall where steering rack is bolted down as the tend to crack there, check condition on bottom of inner lip on doors as the draining holes are getting clogged up and bottom of doors are rusting away, Same goes for the front bottom corners on doors due to this, firewall area where clutch cable passes through firewall (was it repaired or have some cracks or a loose plate).

Does the original papers say GT? Bit suspicious with the changed steering wheel and as far as I can recall there was some distinct changes inside on dash trim too to be different than the std Golfs of that era. Might be a 2 door mk1 1100 where the cambelt side mounting was changed and welded to accommodate the engine mounting. Check for any reweld or different looking welds here. The discoloration in engine bay could be due to a fire or just age, but would need to be checked through though.

As this has been resprayed and showing signs of rust all over, it is likely that you may find some body filler along the way hidden under the paint.

I think this guy is just trying to capitalize on the crazy asking prices people are commanding at the moment. I've seen some mental prices being asked since COVID started.

Have you gone to look at the car yet?

Seems so - I saw a rusty GT for 130k

No, seller only available after hours and it’s somewhat of a drive, I want to make sure there is enough light, so will see if the car is unsold on the weekend.

Yeah, definitely go when you can see it clearly.

Lets assume all goes well and you can grip it for a reasonable price. What are your plans for it?

I’d like to do what you and Kirpals did, take it down to the shell, maybe even media blast it if it does not cost silly money, repair, repaint, get it back to how mine was - mostly stock, stock stickers, bumpers etc. Don’t mind what engine or gearbox really, and suitable wheels, a bit of low but not to mess with ride.

Trouble is I’d like to do as much as I can myself, but I have the technical skills of an aardvark, with the no tools to boot.

....pretty sure the GT had the centre console like GTi with the 3 Gauges....

Yes, the GT and GTS had the 3-gauge console, plus the Wolfsburg steering wheel. It looks like someone has removed both. That's half the interior allure gone.

My GTS had the same colour and upholstery as this one. It was pretty much original (except Keihin carb, after the Pierburg Solex 2B5 failed). It had some rust in the same spots as can be seen above, but much less than this one. We had to sell in a bit of a hurry, so we let it go a couple of years ago for about 17k. We might have hunted for a buyer at 25-30k, but didn't have the time.

For the car shown here, I wouldn't pay more than 20k.

Awesome! Any color preference?

I've done a lot of things on my restoration journey I never expected to do myself. You build up the tools and learn the skills as you go.

I do wish I had been able to spend more time on it these last 3 years though. Caught up nicely recently. Shes gearing up to go for upholstery soon.

Just make sure you have a good place to park and work on it. That's half the battle won. I lost 4 years of my project due to fighting to get my garages built :bang:

If you get stuck, ask for help. I've been trying to do it all myself and not ask for help, probably why I am still not finished :lol: :lol: :lol:

Mine did not have the centre gauges, I remember driving half the country getting a set, and not being able to pay the ridiculous R690 VW wanted for an oil pressure sender unit. Drove to middleburg to get second hand one, only to have it shoot out on the highway spewing oil everywhere. Shoved some cloth into the hole, and Had to buy a five litre oil and top up every couple km to get home…
And then discovered oil had got into the clutch.

Car obviously been resprayed but it looks neat and tidy. Wiring seems to be a mess as no indicators or brake lights.

Why are there unconnected spark plugs on the back of the engine too??

Clutch is really really heavy and gearbox is like mixing a pot of stew…

Starts well but lumpy idle, guy not sure what cam it is using.

Anyone recognise the engine and gearbox? Guy says it’s an RV engine and 4S gearbox but I’m unfamiliar with those references

Body looks neat from the pics, but obvious it's received some spray work.

The spark plugs in the back, seems to be in place where K-jet injectors would sit, when it was coverted to Carb.
The vacuum accumulator also seems to have come from a later model golf.

Agree with Amstel on the plugs being used as k-jet injector blank offs. I think the RV engine is an import one. Cam belt covers also points to that.

4s gear box was used on the jetta/golf mk2 CSX models.... Long ratio box.

yup this one looks much better. looks like the interior and bodywork is fine, only needs a proper engine!
