Golf 5 GTI BWA cam followers or lifters making a ticking noise
Hi guys, my car recently started making a ticking noise. Found that the car had run dry on oil and the oil pressure light never came on. Is it advisable to take the top off and check if the followers need to or can be changed on these motors? Or is the motor busted now?

Fill with new oil, check filter and sump and oil after a few minutes of running for any metal.
Thereafter do a compression test.
Providing that there isn't any metal, compression test is fine and it wasn't run without oil for too long, you could have dodged a new engine.
Ticking noise is usually from hydraulic followers/rocker arms failing, that shouldn't be too hard to replace as it's just removing the top parts of the engine and swapping them out. Don't swap if you have other issues like compression and metal as you will be just wasting money.
Usually though, when a car runs out of oil, the engine is busted.

Once checked you best want to get the oil pressure light sorted!

I'm afraid that the engine might be bustedCallum229 wrote: ↑Wed Dec 16, 2020 11:31 am Fill with new oil, check filter and sump and oil after a few minutes of running for any metal.

Pull the sump off... pull a rod cap and main bearing cap and check for excessive wear... that’ll be your answer whether it’s busted or not. Also check your head... the journals where the cam run on.Don Gustavo wrote:I'm afraid that the engine might be bustedCallum229 wrote: ↑Wed Dec 16, 2020 11:31 am Fill with new oil, check filter and sump and oil after a few minutes of running for any metal.
