MK7 GTI horn not working

Post by sbu.mah »

Hi Gents

Noticed this morning that my horn/hooter is not working, not sure when this happened as I hardly use it.

How does one diagnose the problem, without going to the stealership

You equip yourself with a multimeter and start testing.

Ian I don't even know where to begin. Only time I use a multimeter is to check voltage on some electrical stuff

Most likely fail point I would think would be the fuse, the steering wheel switch and the relay.
First check the fuse.
Check the wires to the hooter horn are still connected.
If that's good, when you press the hooter, do you hear a relay click?
If you can get to the horn, use the multimeter to see if you get 12V across when you press the hooter.
If not, work backwards to the relay if you can find the right one.

Yup. Using the voltmeter to check the voltage on some stuff is exactly what you will do.
belix expanded it some for you. getting to the horn might be real PITA as they are hidden behind the bumper cover.
