Hi
Im looking to get some new tyres for my golf. Something quieter than the Yokohama R1's i currently have on. Any suggestions?

Re: Quiet 18" tyre
Autostyle has a special on Pirelli Cinturato P1 225/40/18s for R1450 per tyre. Very good tyres, quiet, and they have decent grip.

Re: Quiet 18" tyre
Had those on my mk6, no complaints at all.
Preferred the Bridgestone S001 but think they over R2k per Tyre by now

Re: Quiet 18" tyre
I've been running Yokohama Decibel on my Gti - excellent comfort with good handling.(Also made about 50 000km) Only downside is no rim protector, I've been picking up nicks on my wheels. Those Pirelli's above look like excellent value for money though. The Decibels will cost quite a bit more than that.

Re: Quiet 18" tyre
Don't use Directional tyres on Cars that are designed to run on Asymmetric tyres
Using Conti Sport contact 5/ premium contact 5, very happy .
just rotate every 5000k , using FWD cross rotation. being lazy here costs you in the end...
( for asymmetric pattern tyres only!)
old front left to new rear left
old front right to new rear right
old rear left to new right front
old rear right to new left front

Re: Quiet 18" tyre
I just fitted these, must say that they are far nicer handling than the Decibels, with not much downside on comfort and noise. So far excellent all rounder! One of my best friends works close to Yokohama SA so I get great pricing - they are a bit dear at Tiger and Tyres and More (They own Yokohama passenger in SA)

Re: Quiet 18" tyre
"The purpose of using asymmetry in a tread pattern is to allow the tire to be pretty good at 2 conflicting things. The tire to the right has large blocks, which are good for dry traction, and small blocks, which are good for wet and snow traction. Obviously, the large blocks should be on the outside."
FROM: http://barrystiretech.com/directionalan ... tires.html
The tread pattern on a set of tires can increase the amount of noise they produce. Tread designs that are knobby and jagged, such as those popular on off-road vehicles, often are louder than their smoother counterparts. Some manufacturers make effective off-road tires that are not exceptionally noisy, but a rougher tread can cause increased road noise if it has not been designed to minimize the sound."

As with cars, EVERYTHING is a compromise between conflicting things .The suspension geometry of the car, is designed to use the tyre optimally, as the vehicles pitches( accelerate, & brake) , rolls (cornering) . The suspension geometry is constantly changing, and therefore the contact patch between tyre and road is also changing.
Tyre patterns are a huge factor of road noise.
So for example: If they can use a quieter tire, they can put in thinner sound insulation in wheel arches, saving weight, saving money for them, helping fuel economy, accelerate quicker..
They spend billions designing cars, taking into account all these interconnected variables.
