ABF vs PL, KR, 9A head ports – choosing for porting

Post by .wide »

Hi,

I need advice because I’m going to build high flow head to ABF engine.
I’m planning to use big valve TT kit, TT cams and make possible big porting.

I know that ABF has smaller inlet and bigger exhaust port than 9A.

Which cylinder head will be better? I didn’t find answer on forum because a lot of comparison and discussions based on advantages/disadvantages of stock valves, cams etc. etc.
Forget about standard valve size, guides, cams etc. etc. Just flow of ports. Better is make full porting in ABF head or because bigger inlet ports 9A is better and need only exhaust porting?
Or maybe 9a head is able to make bigger inlet ports even ported ABF because for example internal construction?

Second important question (only in ports and combustion chamber size case) is the 9A and PL head this same?
Derek Spratt in his powerful project is using 9A head and I have option to buy PL engine in good price so I would like be sure.

Still actuall?
The majority of misinformation on the web suggests that you use a 1.8 head on a 2.0 block. This like most things having to do with engine tuning is subjective. Everyone is very quick to point out that the 1.8 head out flows the 2.0 head, the key here is that this is in a stock condition. Below is a comparison pic of the stock intake ports on both.

9a and abf head has a water port running through the middle of the intake web so you are restricted in how big you can open the port.

PL and KR has the same head. No water port on intake side web so the ports are bigger by default on the intake.
Exhaust side they are all identical.

Hello,

About what water port are you thinking? Is it visible on these photo?

If yes, could you describe which water port is not included in construction on PL and KR head?
