2009 citisport mpi to mp9

Post by Lnrathan »

Hi all

Just want to say thank you to panic mechanic for assisting me with help on how to convert mpi to mp9. All it cost me was an mp9 ecu plug and box and i wired it colour for colour using a mp9 pinout diagram found here on this forum an a tester.

The car started on 1st attempt no hassle had the ecu flashed and reset timing according to the car now. I have to however change the injectors to mp9 as the mpi ones cannot cope with the load of mp9 i believe mpi are 140cc and mp9 185 cc

OK so firstly it was about removing the ecu i had drill through 4 bolts which are threaded but have no head to put a spanner or socket on it which was quite irritating at 1st but eventually after couple blunt bits it came loose. the tools you require for this is a tester for the wires crimping tool or soldering iron(your choice) i used the crimping tool to join the wire with male 2 female terminals cutters to strip wires.

1st step was to cut off the existing ecu plug i thought that the plug would fit onto the mp9 box with just re-positioning certain wires but the pins on the mpi are bigger than the mp9 pins so that's why its was necessary to cut and join.

2nd was to join an mp9 ecu plug which i had purchased from Allen(hout bay)he is the mp9 guru here in cape town. once that was purchased i proceeded to follow a pin-out diagram found here on this forum.

but before i went ahead i went into my engine bay and wrote down all sensors and there colors that were needed for the conversion( TPS,DIZZY,KNOCK SENSOR,MAP SENSOR,HEAT SENSOR,INJECTORS).

i was fortunate in that the colors on the pin-out diagram was the exact colors that was in the loom and all i did was follow it step by step color for color and with every wire that i joined i tested it to make sure that it was the wire i was connecting because some wires looked similar.

please feel free to ask any questions but that's what i have so far.

Awesome stuff, so all the colors matched wire to wire from mpi, interesting indeed.

Excuse my ignorant question, but whats the benefit of doing this?

Does an mp9 perform better than an mpi equivalent, 1.4I as in this case?

Hi there

The benefit of doing this i think its choice personally. I was after some oomph from the engine and with mpi it had restrictions which limited performance. One main issue i had with mpi was the lamda sensor once its packed up vw wants an arm an a leg for a new one, besides that theres been countless posts on how troublesome this mpi system has been. Some guys have resorted to afm e.g. dicktator and it has helped them, ive went the route of mp9 which for me personally is much more reliable than afm, thats just my opinion btw.

No performance benefit. Some MPI boxes go nuts and or dies. So suddenly randomly starts idling weird and has the fuelling all over the place.
Comes up with a O2 sensor fault that just won't clear. that is when you want to do this. (or go aftermarket).

@ Lloyd and Panic: Thank you for taking time to inform me. Much appreciated.

My citi is mpi so if paw paw pieces start flying about I will know which options are available. Hopefully just engine swop for something exciting.
