CITI 1.4i FFZ gearbox whine

Post by Werner Viviers »

Hi guys. Is it normal for a FFZ gearbox on a CITI 1.4i to whine? I bought the car about a month ago and the noise is starting to drive me nuts.

It starts from around 70km/h and carries on to around 85km/h and only happens when coasting or when trying to maintain a constant speed. It doesn't matter which gear I'm in. Could it be a worn ring or pinion gear?

I'm thinking of buying a new gearbox but just want to make sure if it is normal or not. I have replaced the oil with castrol syntrans 75W90 but it is still the same Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Definitely issue with final drive and its bearings. Replacement or have your box opened and repaired. Replacement might be cheaper.

Thanks for the replies guys. I am going to try to source a new gearbox. Apparently VW SA don't sell them anymore so will have to look elsewhere.

GW was still selling about a year ago. If they can’t help, only place then is the engine / gearbox importers.

If it's a whining noise from the passenger side and you're married, try taking a drive alone and see if the noise goes away

Oh I almost forgot, what would be the best oil to put in the new box? Would Castol Syntrans be ok? I didn't see anything about EP on the bottle when I bought some for the old box... I'm dumb when it comes to gearbox oils.. What would you guys recommend? Thanks!

R8500 without exchange for now. I'm going to send them my old box once the new box is in as I use the car on a daily basis. They will refund me R1600 then.

Thanks Panic. I went to GW today and I ended up buying Liqui Moly fully synthetic 75w90 GL4+. Bought a new Sachs clutch as well. The centre hub where the gearbox splines goes into on the original clutch disc (LUK) is very loose, lots of side to side play, it's the first time I've seen that. The guy at GW told me that it is not normal. So I bought a Sachs kit for R1160.
