Polo 2002 - Identify part

Post by aatlab »

Hi Guys,

I need some help identifying a part. Please excuse my ignorance, as I am not much of a car fundie. But I do prefer to do the work myself.

My car is a Polo Playa 2002 1.8l model. I assume this means it's a Mk2? Anyhoo, can you identify the part in the pic? It's leaking oil and I need to fix it.

Thanks a stack,

you have drawn a really large circle including about 4 different parts
In your circle is a orange thing. That is called a dipstick funnel
Then there is a water pipe
and there is the block breather and the breather pipe. often the pipe cracks and /or the seal fails than it start leaking
Pull the green clip up and pull the pipe out of the breather housing and see what is leaking.
your polo is known as 6N here not by mk anything. That polo is actually a seat so not known as a polo to the rest of the world.

Thank you!

The part I was referring to then is the block breather. What is it's purpose? And what is the part that connects to the crankcase? Does this work in conjunction with the PCV?

Fortunately I am not so ignorant that I dont know what a dipstick and water pipe is :-), but I agree the circle was not a very obvious target.

And good info about the model, I knew it was somehow connected to the Seat, but not quite sure how. Trying to find a Haynes manual was tricky. The one I was sold a few years ago was not the correct one.

Yep, it is a rebadged and slightly modified MkII (6k) SEAT Ibiza which is based on the MkIII VW Polo.

The block breather is the part that connects to the crankcase. And it does not work "in conjunction" with the PCV, but rather it forms part of the PCV.
The PCV consists of
... some type of flange fitted to the crankcase - what we called the block breather above
... a pipe
... sometimes a valve
... and some connector that leads the crankcase gases into the intake duct.

The purpose is to remove blow-by gases, excess pressure and oil mist from the crankcase and feed them back into the air intake for combustion in the engine, rather than dumping them in the atmosphere.

[Edit: the oil mist is not purposely removed as such. It is carried along with the gas stream.]
