1981 Vw Mk1 Golf cabriolet Brakes
My old 1981 Vw Golf Cabriolet brake booster is totalled... I heard a golf mk2 booster will fit bolt on is that true or what other booster can work since the original booster is discontinued and the new spec citi golf boosters require modifications.
Any help would be greatly appreciated... It has to be a bolt on servo

Re: 1981 Vw Mk1 Golf cabriolet Brakes
Measure and cut the pin off the mk1 brake booster and weld it onto the mk2 booster . Use a 22mm Master cylinder .Blank off the unnecessary ports . Fit back the original brake pipes making sure they are in the correct position . Godspeed

Amazing reply..... Thanks for the help... I made a few calls, I got offered a vw fox brake booster that I was told should just bolt on.... But honeslty I'd love to do the mk2 booster, the cars stock brakes suck balls...

Re: 1981 Vw Mk1 Golf cabriolet Brakes
@SayedMkI - How did you sort out the fewer number of ports on the master cylinder?

Re: 1981 Vw Mk1 Golf cabriolet Brakes
@neuk I did not use the one on the new spec booster. That one only has 2 ports. The mk2 22mm Mc has 4 ports. If you plan on using the Mc with 2 ports you will have to run the pipes with all the fittings found on the new spec citingolfs.

Re: 1981 Vw Mk1 Golf cabriolet Brakes
I thought as much, I have similar issues with my MkI at the moment although I believe it is just the booster that needs replacing, and @EX-DOHCTOR had similar with his MkI but has since redone some of the brake lines to account for newer master cylinders only having two ports.SayedMK1 wrote: ↑Wed May 23, 2018 8:31 am @neuk I did not use the one on the new spec booster. Re: 1981 Vw Mk1 Golf cabriolet Brakes
Just get a complete new spec setup and run the lines and you'll be sorted. The new spec mechanism straight fit for the most part. You'll have to drill 2 additional holes but that's not major. Hope you get it sorted

Re: 1981 Vw Mk1 Golf cabriolet Brakes
If this was aimed at me, no thanks, I want to keep my MkI as is for as long as possible. I am going to see her this weekend so will get a better idea of what needs to be done to sort her brakes out.

Re: 1981 Vw Mk1 Golf cabriolet Brakes
Nope, rear disks are a bit of a waste on a MkI.

Rather buy a pair of wilwood calipers and bigger disks and upgrade the front braking system.

Re: 1981 Vw Mk1 Golf cabriolet Brakes
I see, for looks only then I would consider it, I don't believe rear discs provide any major benefit over drums unless you are building a massively powerful MkI. And even then, upgrading the front setup will yield better results...
