Heatercore bypass help needed

Post by Jasondj »

Hi all

Over the weekend i helped a buddy with his golf. We bypassed hes heatercore as it was leaking a crap load into the car. We searched high and low for a U-bend pipe. We found a U-bend pipe at Brights hardware and the 2 screw in fittings to fit the hoses onto, all in steel.

I used heavy duty thread tape to seal but by the looks of things the tread tape is not coping with the heat or i did the application wrong.

Does thread tape work and i made an error or is there something else i should use?

Its only leaking at the one joint but one drop every 10 seconds or so only when at operating temperature.

Input would be gladly appreciated.

Use a 90 degree or U bend pipe that is the same size as the internal diameter of the water pipes.
No other fitings or thread tape or other things needed. Just clamps.

Done many many heater bypasses before and not one has leaked.

I normally just use a single plastic 90 degree. Don't really need it to be a U. The pipes will flex enough to let the 90 deg work.

I bought a metal hollow (similar diameter to core pipes) hanger shaped like a J and ended up cutting off the horizontal part to be left with a U type joint. Use this and hose clamps to secure. Initially looked for copper U joints but seems only aircon suppliers have, then I saw the metal bike / hose hanger, still functional.
