To retorque or not to retorque head bolts after 1000 kms.

Post by mellos »

Good day
I just want to find out if it is necessary to retorque head bolts after 1000 kms
and if it is needed what would the procedure be.
Some say to loosen the bolts a little and then retorque.

Thanks.....

What motor?

But generally, no need to retorque. Torque them once and leave them.be.

I haven't heard of head bolts that you have to retorque and they are normally TTY/stretch bolts and you can break them by tightening for a second time.
So if the workshop manual for your specific engine doesn't say you must retorque, then don't do it.

Rather replace the engine oil and filter after 1000km, after you worked inside the engine.

It is a Tazz 1300 12 valve.

The cambelt broke so a rocker broke and bent 2 valves so we just replaced the rocker
and done all the valves so no other work done besides the head.

If you followed the correct torque proceedure for that car then it should be ok... I remember doing a tazz with 4agze in november and for the head bolts it was something stupid like 40NM and then 90Degree and then another 90 degree and that was it... there was no requirement to retorque the head after 1000 km's..

From what i have researched the old non stretch bolts needed to be re torqued, the reason for manufactures using stretch bolts was to do away with this old method so that customers didn't have to come back to the dealer for this mundane task plus some other various reasons.

Pot kak. You can't retoque torque to yield bolts. Go kick the oke in the nuts that told you that.

What do you retorque it to if it's was already done initially? Never understood this retorque business

I'd understand if the bolt came lose but then that would mean something wrong with bolt(thread or stretched) or it wasn't done properly initially

Sounds like a phrase used for the 1000km checkup after a major engine repair

Anyways , I would just buy new bolts if the current bolts has done alot of mileage or was used more than once

Ahhh yes I see. I keep telling people not to reuse stretch bolts but if they are in a pinch then they can be reused but only once. More then twice is a definite toss them away.

Re-torquing deals with the NON STRETCH bolt after it has gone through its thermal cycles and vibrations.

Use a steel gasket , new TTY bolts and you wont have to retorque

They used crappy head gaskets back in the day

it' not that. Cast iron heads with non stretch bolts would change clamping force after a few heat cycles. Since Aluminium heads and TTY bolts there is no such thing as re-torque. No matter what head gasket material is used.
