Whining sound from Polo gearbox

My 2008 VW Polo 1.4 is making a whining sound from the gearbox, it sounds like a diff whine on an old bakkie. It only makes the sound when I accelerate on cruising speed, the noise stops as soon as I leave the accelerator. Kindly advise.

When mine did that it was a number of things. Ended up having the box rebuilt at a cost of about 9K... twice.

No, you'll end up with the same issue in time.

AFAIK 8V perfomance has recon gearboxes for about 12k and you can trade yours in for a discount. Maybe chat to them.

Thanks for the assistance, but is it not possible to repair the gearbox...change the bearings or something

Anything is possible. You're going to need to take the box out and have it looked at and then fix what ever is broken.

In my case it was a whole host of things, bearings as a start, differential aswell. I dropped 9k into the rebuild and then had to drop another 9k to fix the same things again not long after, I am talking 18k to fix the same box for the same issues in the space of a barely 6 months.

Would've been cheaper to just replace the box and be done with it in my case. It's impossible to say what the issue could be over the internet though. Some one has to look at the internals.

If you don't intend on fixing it just yet, replace the gearbox oil with something decent to see if that helps quiet it down.

Might help it along for a bit. I used a similar trick on my old polo. Something made a noise, I just turned the radio up until I couldn't hear it anymore

I also had this ongoing whine coming from the left side of my car.

Eventually it stopped when I told my wife that she is not allowed in my 2 door anymore .

I am experiencing the same problem with my polo 6 2012 model 1.4
The noise stops when clutching, so I got the clutch kit replaced today, unfortunately the sound is still there, so will try to top up the gearbox oil tomorrow and see how it goes.

Intermediate shaft seems to be the problem, from what you saying
