Vw mk1 brake booster delete question

Post by Kyli3boi »

Hi gents,

I'm busy with a brake booster delete and I would like to change the master cylinder to have 2 lines for the front brakes and then 1 going to the rear, now I would like to know what cylinder should I use? Also Volkspares sells beetle cylinders that look like they would work but I'm not sure which size because one is 17mm inside and one is 19mm inside so which would work best. The brakes are 280mm in front with rear disks also with a Tilton brake proportioning valve for the rears

It's the same setup as what I'm running in my GT - 19mm master cylinder, fronts are split to 280mm disks, single rear (through Tilton brake proportioning valve) to GTi 2 rear disks and calipers. I use the 4th port on the m/c for by brake light pressure switch. Brakes are extremely potent, no fade and only marginally more braking effort required than a stock setup.
Current rides:

VW Golf - 83 GT 2.1 16V 2-door with throttles
VW Golf - 78 LS 2.0 8V 4-door (2.1 ABF with throttles in progress)
VW Golf - '08 Citi Storm - 1.4 for now
Hyundai - 1.4 Getz (daily)

What would the difference be between using the 19mm one and the 17mm one because the price difference is massive

19mm would mean less pedal travel (firmer pedal) but more braking effort required, 17mm would mean more pedal travel but less braking effort required.

Thanks for clearing that up for me, I think ill go with the 17mm then as I cant justify a extra R600 odd for less pedal travel unless the pedal travel is changed so dramatically that the pedal would hit the floor.

I've got the 19mm and my pedal travel is minimal, I have never driven a car with the 17mm m/c but the guys reckon it is similar to driving a car with stock brakes.
