Talk to me about Stretch Tyres

Post by LYFGP0 »

So as the topic states..
I just need some info and what your views are on this.

Using my car as an e.g (to see pics, click on rides thread link in signature) My mags are 'like normal' ET35, 7.5J, 4/100.

I was always playing around with the idea of putting on stretch tyres. Tyres in mind is 185/35/17 or 185/40/17 If available.

What's the pro's and con's of these tyres?
I use my car daily, so are they safe?

stretch really only looks good on wide (8J and up) wheels IMHO

and really its proper function is to provide more clearance between the fender and sidewall, to allow for more slammage, also so it doesn't rub when slammed, and in Europe the tread part of the tire must not be outside the line of the body...

So unless you dropped nice and low on some wide wheels, it looks a lil silly...

For daily drive, safety etc its perfectly safe, remember that drifters run stretched tires and they run them to buggery, without probs like them coming off etc and plenty daily drives in europe etc with stretch without issues

The only issue is like Aslam said, the sidewall is more exposed, so there is more danger of potholes etc cutting the sidewall...

on a 7J rim I wouldn't go for any stretch, will look weird...

I wouldn't use those sizes on a daily. Apart from the potholes being a problem , the ride would be extra hard.

Look at the difference between the wheels I have on Fes, 7.5J I believe, and those on Roadhawg's Rat which are 8.5J and we run the exact same spec tyre...

I have stretched tyres on my 19 Oem Helios on the Gti.
my personal opinion is it not worth it.
Will be changing to 235's once they worn out.

potholes are a schlep, the inner rim gets scrapped easily when going up or down pavements, the out rim get stone chips easily from the front tyres.
the list goes on and on.

Ride is very stiff and you feel bumps alot

I don't think they make that much of a difference hey, I know my friend had 225' and went to 235's and he didn't feel a difference instead he had rubbing issues with the bigger tyre.

LOL, with a tyre thats covers the rim edge sufficiently you wont scrap the rim first as there is enough tyre side wall. also more cushioning and the rim protector covers the edge of the rim nicely

The tyre height would be the same so the ride would still be stiff, only scrapping is sorted.

I have seen and spoken to various other MK5/MK6 Gti drivers with 225 and 235s on. Some have rubbing issues and some it was perfect

Going from 235's to 225's is hardly stretching a tyre...

I don't see the "safety" concerns everyone is going on about

I've had some pretty hectic stretch on 2 of my cars & no issues whatsoever.

As said, RoadHawg is running 175 tyre on 8.5J stretch

Tyres won't just climb off, potholes I have hit a lot of & no issues. But, I have to agree with Ruan, if you need to talk about it, don't do it

RoadHawg talked about it, then did it...

How else you supposed to learn about stretch and what tyre works best etc

I don't get that comment at all
