Polo knocking noise suspension Droplinks/Conlinks *DIY fix*
Howzit guys,
So I got new LCA bushes fitted by Morne (G60 golf) (Nice guy and very helpful!)
Now I asked him to look at the rest of the car while he was fitting these bushes to see where the front end knocking is coming from. I honestly give up the dam thing!
Morne told me that the right conlink? (Aka stabalizer bar) is worn and needs replacing. Other than that - he says everything else is fine/ no play etc.
I have bought a new conlink from GW this afternoon and will fit it tonight. However something tells me I will still have knocking sound up front.
The knock happens over every tiny little frikking bump in the road. And only SOMETIMES over speed bumps - but not always.
If there is still knocking upfront - what to look at next? The following has been checked/ replaced:
LCA Bushes (left and right replaced)
Conlinks - (Left and right replaced)
CVs - checked and no issues.
Wheel bearings - checked and no issues
Tie rods - checked and no issues.
Ball joints - checked and no issues.
Where next?
Just making this post now - as I know I will be making it later on after fitting the new conlink and finding out there is still knocking!!
By the way - thanks Morne - you're a start - bushes are all good - and you even reset the service indicator!

Re: Where to next?
Morne is spot on. I think it is the droplink. Attaches to the stabilizer bar.
To help you check - if you turn right over a bump if the right one is worn then it will make a noise. If you turn left over a bump if the left one is worn then that one will make a noise....

Re: Where to next?
Hey dude, I had the same issue with my TDI a fokken knock sound. I eventually after replacing almost everything, found that it was the link rod. Its basically the short rod where one end goes to the strut and other to the stabiliser bar. It has two ball joints on either side. Take it off and feel if it has play. I have my old ones lying at home if you want to compare/test them.

if you turn your wheel to the right and peep under the fender of your right wheel you will see a 40cm or so rod going fromyour shock to your stabiliser bar.

Re: Where to next?
i must be having the same problem and its only on my right side too,
i can only hear it when im driving really slow like in a driveway and there are small bumps. it makes like a cracking noise,
my car has been dropped and it was done about 2 years ago, but the noise only happened these past couple of months.
please let me know what the solution is...

Yes, dropped cars do wear down these links slighlty quicker.
This is what I have heard to help you check - if you turn right over a bump if the right one is worn then it will make a noise. If you turn left over a bump if the left one is worn then that one will make a noise.

My concern now is the part I got from GW - the two end bolts can move up and down and guy at GW said this was correct - I am not so sure.

Re: Where to next?
Will try this on way home - but I have been listening to the noise a lot and cannot make out if it is right or left of car.MeanTdi wrote:Hey 1.9TurboVw1.9TurboVw wrote:i must be having the same problem and its only on my right side too,

Exactly - and come to think of what 1.9TurboVw just said - it has gotten a lot worse over the last few months!MeanTdi wrote:Yes, like a 'gunk-gunk' sound.Tander wrote:The noise on my car is not cracking - it is like a soft knocking sound.
But are the bolts meant to be able to move up and down like this new part does?
@1.9TurboVw - Unless the new part is faulty (Waiting for answer on this if anyone knows the above?) I am fitting it tonight and will post results tonight as well.
I just hope it resolves the problem as it is driving me nuts to the point I am starting to hate driving the car...this is not good!

This is what the oke at GW said - "Your shocks etc move - so those parts have to as well"MeanTdi wrote:I have never fitted it so have no idea. I guess they must move up and down as the camber changes.Tander wrote:But are the bolts meant to be able to move up and down like this new part does?
So I guess it is fine then.
