Citi Golf Fuel Related Problem! Please Help!!

Post by Skillet »

Hi all!!

My GF has got a 1993 Citi Golf 1.3. The car started sucking up fuel like a V6 and I took it to our Diesel Electric franchise in town. They replaced the rubber gasket underneath the carb and adjusted the carb.

The first morning she had to drive to work she only managed to go +-30km and the car started stuttering as if running out of fuel. It then came to a complete stop. She tried dtarting a few times and after a while it started and she drove another +-40km without any problem until it happened again. This time it started immidiatly and she made it to work (+- another 30km) without a problem. We then noticed that this happens more when it is cold outside and that the previous high fuel usage was nothing compared to the 9km/liter we were measuring now!! I took the car back to the workshop and they checked the carb settings again and took it for a test drive (10km). Obviously the car did not do it then.... They recon it can be the fuel pump...

ANY advice would be greatly appreciated!!

Does the car perhaps have an alarm fitted with an immobilizer or anti hijack? I know those things give problems sometimes with the device they put on the fuel line.

Also when last was the fuel filter replaced?

It does have a alarm system but I doubt its doing fuel as well as it is real simple cheapo thing. Not sure if it is standard, but noticed a small plastic inline fuel filter. This I have replaced with last service. After this the fuel line runs to a large black steel type unit mounted with a bracket to the engine? And only after that the mechanical fuel pump.

Did they open the carb? Could be dirt in the carb or a faulty coil.

Rather buy a good quality part that will last then buying a cheap part that won't last.

I have googled the part number on the metal thing: It is called a VACUUM VAPOUR CANNISTER (http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/GOLF-MK1-MK2-CADD ... 0821500835) Also noticed that it is in fact AFTER the fuel pump and not before as I previously mentioned. Fuel gets pumped into it and then there are 2 outlets, one going to carb and the other back to fuel tank. Bypassing it will cause to much fuel to get pushed to the carb ?

Can this thing get clogged up? Is it a service replacing part?

it needs to be changed at some time because it has a filter sort of pick up on the inside and can get blocked. When I had a similar problem I bypassed it by just fitting another fuel filter and left the return loose, took car for test drive and problem solved, so drove to spares shop, bought another unit and sorted

How does car cut out fast or slow?
Does the rev counter jump up and down when it does it?
One needs to get it to do it then check fuel and spark to see what it short.
Most common on then is the tci/dist/coil.
Maybe it is sprk related and not fuel related.
How is the cam timming on the car as that can also cause high fuel consumption?

It cuts out very slow. Still goes for about 1 to 2km until it eventually stop.
She drove 200km yesterday when it was warm outside and it did not do it once.
This morning it did it again twice while driving it is -3celcius outside! Always only go for +-40km between stops.
Can the outside temp affect the coil/dist and tci?
The people that worked on it checked the timing again when I took it back.

Thread Resurrection!!

I have replaced:

Fuel Pump
Fuel Filter
Vacuum Vapor Thingy
Points

Did not fix anything.

I have decided to take the car to a recommended workshop nearby. Mechanic hooked the car to a device that measures CO? I think? Some sensor into the exhaust etc.

Anyway, he found that the carb was TOTALLY out! Adjusted it a bit and I did a trip of 100km and got 15.5km/l!!! This is a record for this car! Everything was fine for about a month, then it all started again. 8.8km/l, car stalls at every traffic light, car cuts out on trips...

Why would the carb adjust itself?! If that is indeed what is happening?

I am charged for the time they work on the car and going back a month later to adjust the carb again will not get me anywhere.

Advice please guys!

Could still be the coil. Otherwise get a new carb.

Hi all,

Correct me if I am wrong. But the carb should not just adjust itself out?

I think to make sure though - check what color your spark plugs are burning. Black and oily - too rich. Grey to white - to lean. Ideal for me - dark brown chocolate color. ;)

I do this occasionally with my 1.3 citi and use it as a reference as to the tuning. Crude, but I don't have a CO meter. :(

Cheers

Craig.

Had a similar problem with my 1994 Citi 1.4 Carb.
This issue can be a result by two culprits
1.Air sucking up in through your Carb Breather Hose
(Had mine blocked, and got problem solve. Car drove nicely for close to 6000KM)

2. Dead Fuel Resevior (That "Metal thingy" which is mounted by a bracket on the engen)
(After first problem carb started leaking out fuel, so I got Carb Kits, and did it. Just to realise that first problem has started again. Tried working magic on the breather hoses, but yielded no results. I then bypassed the "Metal thingy", and feeded fuel straight to Carb and blocked the return line, and :troll: :hurray: :violin: whooopiii problem fixed. Who cares if I`m driving that thing returning fuel or not. After all it serves no useful purporse. Been driving My 1989 Kadett 1.3 LS without it returning fuel, and enjoyed it, until suddenly a good family friend needed to buy it since he was going through stuffs)

Try that and trust me it`ll work guaranteed! :driving:

Hi Guys
My Golf Chico 1.4i has been having the problem of noisy fuel pump for two years now.

I tried cleaning the fuel tank, changed fuel filter but the fuel pumps keeps burning up after buzzing for long time.

I am currently riding on my eighth fuel pump in two years which can give up anytime from now.

Please help, what might be the problem...
