Everytime I see one of these I remember why I'm no longer in business. I totally undercharged....
This one I find very interesting..
But this is nothing. I saw a bill the other day for rebuilding a N/A 2.5 L subaru engine. R74k....

I've worked it out. He charges R134,40 to turn the key to get the engine to start so that the lifters can set themselves...

"PLUG FIT AND SUPPLY WELSCH PLUGS 335.61"
Pay that when the motor is still in I can kinda understand ? when the motor is out it's like what a 2 min job ?
"LAP IN & ASSEMBLE VALVES 122.72"
The lap in part I understand but how do you assemble a valve ?
"PRESSURE TEST CYL HEAD 219.48"
Why ? your rebuilding the thing in any case ?
"GRIND CRANK SHAFT 567.09"
Not something I would do . Ok I suppose on a NA car but defn not on a turbo car.
"REMOVE & REFIT ENGINE 3 000.00"
It's a crap job but sheesh !
I'm so glad that when I was a lightie my dad made me help him on his cars !!!

17K for that is a bit rough. I rebuilt my ADY motor with fresh rings, bearings, gaskets etc AND added a turbo kit for just over 15K.

joggiep the valve assembly im sure means fit valves with springs retainers etc. and pressure testing the head isnt for checking if the valve and its sealing surface is holding, its so you know the head isnt cracked and a waste of your money before you build the entire head over.

Golf 1.
Chico or Shuttle would be my bet. Simple and easy to get at things. Parts are cheap and easy to get.
That makes for a good learning car.
DIY, isn't hard. It just takes time and effort to start with. After a few cock up's and a so on, you learn. Also, read, read, read. With forums like this available, it's loads easier.

I use to know fokall about mechanical issues before. After reading the advice thats given to many others on this forum from experienced and helpful individuals, I have learnt alot. So many have dropped 2L motors in their cars here that some can even do with their eyes closed.
It just takes patience I guess and a post or two on this forum and you should be sorted in no time. I would suggest that for 17k, get yourself the motor, a good toolbox and a couple friends to assisst you and once completed, you can give them a huge party & still have remainder cash.
The forum guys are very helpful and your location helps. Lotsa okes from here live in and around Jhb that Im sure will be willing to help you out at a minimal fee offcourse.

I know it's 10 years later and the quote has radiator extra and so on,but what is a ballpark figure to do an 8v with the "usual" replacement parts like rings, valve guides, big ends etc (without new pistons and new valves and things like that, just a good rebuild if nothing major needs replacing)?

Step 1 would be to go to a spares shop like Midas, Autozone or Alert and get pricing on parts.Brandy01 wrote: ↑Sun Oct 04, 2020 9:48 am I know it's 10 years later and the quote has radiator extra and so on,but what is a ballpark figure to do an 8v with the "usual" replacement parts like rings, valve guides, big ends etc (without new pistons and new valves and things like that, just a good rebuild if nothing major needs replacing)?
engineering would be to do over the head (Actually, you would know once the motor is opened up.)
