OBD2 scanner work on old jetta?

Post by ED van Greunen »

Does anyone know if the generic OBD2 scanners can read boost codes on a 2003 jetta tdi?

Car goes into a soft limp now and then on cold mornings only. Obviously need to see if it is overboost or underboost to further troubleshoot. Will the +- R250 obd2 scanners assist or will i waste my money on it?

Many thanks

Soem work - some don't. just saying generic scanner means nothing. You have to be very specific.
Jetta 4 already has some sort of canbus system and many generic scanners will simply not work on them.
Sadly I have always used a genuine vcds so can't really tell you which other things work.
Maybe somebody will chip in.

If it was my 250 and i only needed to do one time scan, i would ask one of the guys to do VCDS scan for me.

It makes business sense if it is for one time use unlike buying something that one is not sure that it is going to work or not.

I know the generic blue ELM327 (or whatever it is) OBD2 Scanner didn't work on a Golf 4 TDI, wanted scan a friends car, no luck. It didn't communicate.

Ended up asking a friend that had one. He had the more advanced payed for app on his phone not the free app. I did work fine picking up all the parameters it usually gives but could not pick up any more detail. no fault codes picked up or anything even though it did go into limp that morning.

Was quoted R600 ex for a diagnostic from turboworks in Centurion. some searching later brought up these guys and like panic mentioned might as well get my own proper scanner.
