Golf 4 GTi A/C & Radiator Fan issues

Post by tendyfish »

Hello Guys

I took the car on a road trip this weekend, while on the highway i noticed my A/C was blowing hot air no matter what i did. then after a while i got stuck in traffic and noticed the temp on the gauge went past 90 up to the next bar and only went back to 90 when i was in motion, the radiator fans were not kicking in at all. After some research it pointed me to a blown fuse that sits on top of the battery. I replaced the fuse and the fans now kick in after idling for sometime. However, when i turn the A/C at any given time, it also kicks in the radiator fans even when the engine is not running or even when its cold. Just wondering what could be happening here. Please help

fans will always run when the aircon is on. that is correct behaviour.

Surely that can't be correct behaviour?

he does not specify if the ignition is on or not. So yes the fans will run with the ignition on and the engine not running. If the ignition is off yes that would be an issue but that was not specifically stated ? if the fans run with ignition off then the fan controller relay is faulty.

I actually didn't know that the Mk4 fans switch on when the engine is off but ignition and AC are both on. (Actually went outside to my Mk4 to double-check.)
On my '92 Audi [edit: with climatronic], this is not the case. The compressor must actually be running before the fan kicks in (which makes much more sense to me... after all, why would you run a fan if there is no heat to dissipate).

Learnt something new today.
