1.8 mp9 conversion to turbo

Post by Chanky »

Hi all need some advice I have a 1.8 8v mp9 setup in a mk2 jetta.

What I want to do is I want to fit a turbo on its not for speed I just like the sound of it.

I was told if I fit a turbo I believe its a t1 turbo I won't have to do anything on my motor to run a turbo.

Thanks in advance
For your replies.

If you are planning on doing this purely for the sound, then I suggest getting a CD with turbo sounds on that you can play through the car's sound system, will be way easier and cheaper.

It is not as simple as you think. Or as cheap as you think.

You will need:

Turbo
Exhaust manifold
Exhaust
Aftermarket management tuned by a decent tuner
Bigger injectors
Lower compression pistons or a spacer plate to drop the compression ratio
Intercooler and piping
etc
etc
etc

It can be done, but it is a very expensive excercise. I have been there, done that, used the t-shirts for oil rags (lots of t-shirts...)

Or you can drop in a motor like a 1.8T 20 valve with aftermarket management. Will also be an expensive outlay.

Chanky, what is your budget and will you be doing some of the work yourself?
Good useful advise from @Jetta2

Thanks Jetta2 for the reply but do I need to do injectors and compression done if I fit a small turbo like a T1 or T2.

Unobeat I will be doing most of the work my self not that I am a mechanic but I am a I bit mechanically inclined and have some tools and some friends from whom I can borrow some tools if I need to.

These topics come up as often as the teller asking you if you want a packet after purchasing your groceries.

Point being there is a million and one , search for it and you will find the answers. Good luck with the build take pics along the way and post it up. Your questions will be answered more frequently as the build proceeds. Buy what you can agree with buying a complete engine with turbo and working from there.

The 1.8 20v turbo motors are really awesome, I would really just buy one and fit that. I have one fitted to my 1999 mk3.5 cabriolet, but it really is not a cheap exercise, will cost you at least a good R70 000 to do.

As Jetta2 mentioned, you can fit a small turbo to your current motor, you can get away with not dropping compression if it's a small turbo with low boost, but I can promise you that you will itch for more power and boost, so it's best to do things right the first time.

Here is some topics I found......

Whether you fit a small turbo or a larger more usefull turbo the final cost will be in the same area.

Do it once and do it right with no shortcuts when it comes to a turbo set up its gona cost u alot more money if done wrong and u melt pistons or blow the head due to overboost or too high compression. if its the SOUND u are after and NOT PERFORMANCE then go to the boksburg flee market they sell a red speaker that looks like a turbo it costs R600 its programmed to make turbo sounds u put a switch under ur clutch and everytime u change a gear u hear the tsssssss thats the best advice bru other than that speak to the more experienced guys who are already giving u advice ask them for a quote and work from there its not only spanners that u need to build a car
