Catalytic converters Golf 6 GTI

Post by WesleyE »

Hi Guys,

Hoping you can help.

This morning I drove my car, after 30 min of traffic driving suddenly the car started jerking.

Not long there after engine light came on and car isles like a truck . Difficult to rev up and really slow to drive.

Get to work and check the manual says light is for the catalytic converter.

These are extremely expensive to replace, my questions:

-can I replace with a down pipe
-if so what is the price I’ll be looking and are there recommendations? ( I’m based in Johannesburg South -Mondeor)
- I don’t have access to a diagnostic machine and don’t know anyone with one. Is there anyway of knowing for sure it is the cat converter?

Car is 2014 Golf 6 GTI manual, with 198++ kilo serviced last month and include plugs, filters and oil.

Thank you

Yes, the light indicates a number of possible issues. You need to get car scanned at a VW agent, or someone with VCDS.

Had this light on for a while. First vw says it is the cat sensor, replaced and did not solve the problem. Then they suspected it is the intake manifold - again did not resolve the issue. They ended up canceling the error, but doubt root cause was resolved.

Thanks for the replies, did a quick YouTube check to see if I could diagnose the PCV. Idled the car and pulled the dipstick no suction, then took the oil cap off still no suction idle does change slightly but does not die out.

Looking at the tailpipes it seems much darker than usually and extreme black residue in a powder form.

Ever done/checked your chain tensioner? If the chain skipped a tooth or two your timing could be out and at the very worst you have an even bigger issue as a result

Thanks for the replies guys, this morning dropped my son off at school. Car drive fine still had the check light on, as soon as I drop him off car starts jerking again low rpms loss of power and rough idle.

Get home and leave the car idling, start pulling each coil pack one by one. As soon as I pull each one car drops idle and is about to stall, did this except use for each coil pack.

None seem to be the problem, however rough idle fades away and car seems fine.

Check light still on, take a quick drive around the block and no issues.

Check on the car every hour , just started it now and engine light is off.

I’m not sure what the heck is going on, hopefully will have the car scanned tonight

No errors, but engine light on? Peculiar. Even if it goes on and off, it should log a fault until the codes are cleared. Who did the scan for you?

Did They check all the modules, gearbox included or just looked at engine? If the engine light went on and even it it self cancelled there must be a recorded fault somewhere.

I will request for log and update it here.

Honestly I don’t know how to read any of it and truth be told sigh of relieve when I was told no errors.

Not sure if related to the issue but worth mentioning.

About 3 weeks ago I saw what seemed to be a water leak, car was due for a service so asked them to check the water pump as that made sense. In checking the water pump was told that it’s not leaking and the water is actually coming from the connector hose running into the car (heater box?).

Didn’t get around to replacing it and I’ve been typing up water almost every second day. On the day the catalytic converter came on it basically only water no anti freeze. I’ve since topped up with anti freeze.

Car seems to be running fine for now, get paid next week so hoping to book the car in for a full bumper to bumper inspection, just need a reliable mechanic in the South of JHB.

I must mention that this car has a full service history and a call to VW confirmed that the Necessary recalls have been done.

Finally got my own OBD scanner, scanned car only fault was P0354, ignition coils. Suspected this as the only fix was removing and then re inserting coils. Will have a look at the spark plugs as soon as the engine cools down.

Find it strange that this is happening since I have the red top coil packs, reviews were great and no issues reported

Remove the dipstick while the car is idling and if it fixes the rough idle or you feel a strong vacuum coming from it, it's probably pcv. If the cat is clogged, there will be a light blue sort of residue at the Downpipe. Can just have the cat cut out for a fraction of the cost a new Downpipe if you don't want to spend money on a new 76mm one.
