Reboring 1000cc to 1500cc

Post by DocJ021 »

Hi Gents, just out of interest, do you think it would be possible to rebore the current Polo AW 1.0l block to 1.5l. I ask because you can get the Seat 1.5l forge pistons and since we are not getting the 1.5l TSI EVO engine anytime soon this might be a cool option to play around with. What are your thoughts? There is not alot of info on these engines but the ford fiesta ST uses a 1.5 3 cylinder too.

Interesting question you pose.
I just wonder if there is even any tuning house yet, can remap the ECU as the car is still rather new in our Market.

So the remap I have done, but that is for the standard 1000cc, I would then use a 1.5 tsi evo/seat as a base and go from there.

Awesome and great figures.

Would be an interesting build and we would like to follow it.

Not possible at all, no matter how much money you throw at it.

Unless you get one of those Seat motors...
1.0 TSI shares the same bore as the Seat 1.5 at 74.5mm (so getting the Seat pistons will be a waste of money), but the Seat has a 85.9mm stroke compared to the 1.0's 76.4mm.
The Seat is a 4 cylinder and not a 3 cylinder like the 1.0.

I'm not here to argue, but ford and volvo have got 1,5l 3 cylinder motors. So just wondering what size those would be bore'd. and what pistons would have to go with that.

It is not possible to rebore it that large. If it ever needs reboring, the maximum piston size would be 1.5mm bigger on the bore, and you will end up at something like 1030cc (up from the stock 999cc), nowhere near the 1.5 litres you are thinking of getting.

Ford and Volvo have 1.5L 3 cylinder motors, yes, but they were designed from the ground up to be that size.
They don't just take 1.0L blocks and bore them to 1.5L.

Thank you very much, that answer makes 100% sense to me. So the test will now be to see how much power the 1.0 3 cylinder can handle.

Just bear in mind not everyone has the same amount of knowledge and we come here to learn, so the dumbest questions are those not asked.

You are a cylinder short to get to 1500. It will basically be impossible. Bore will not get you there.
But lemme ask a quick other question. Car under warranty / maintenace plan?

Yea car is under maintenance / warranty. Was just interested in understanding the logistics. Although I could imagine this block was made to be as small as possible with little weight. Thus no extra width for boring possibilities. Unfortunately they are very new engines so there is very little reading material about them.

If you hell-bent of wanting a 1.5 and have alot of cash and some good engineering contacts. Explore installing the Polo head on a ford/volvo 1.5 3 cyl block.

This would be a first and all "school fees" will be on you.

other option would be to build the bottom end and go big turbo in your quest for power.
