Golf 5 GTI Misfire

Post by JeanGti5 »

HI there

I have a Golf 5 GTI Unique Motorsport stage2 software and downpipe...
between 3000 and 4000 RPM the car misfires...

According to Unique Motorsport, I have to replace the coils...
There was nothing wrong with coils, or any misfire before software upgrade...

Pls can any one HELP??

Sounds more like the tuner blames coils now for his map that might not be right.

How is the condition of the sparkplugs and are they set to the correct gap?

Can you get some logs to determine what causes this?

If he has a set of coils and conveniently blames them to tell you that you need new coils, it's far too ironic to claim it's coils randomly.

Does it clear up after 4k?

Where are u based ? If u close to boksburg i have a spare set of coils and plugs that u can put into your car and test 1st ...dont buy anything yet coz they will not refund you ...u know the rule with electronic items ...(to my understand but stand to be corrected) ...if it is a coil or plug it will mis fire from 0 to red line not inbetween or at certain revs

Another tuner that does not even own a dyno.... Sigh. What is the world coming to. Please rather call him a file loader. Better description.

Yeah start with plugs and coils but get the car to someone who can scan it to see if it brings up an errors.

What plugs did you get? What is the gap on them?
If it is a coil then log the car to see which cylinder the missfire occurs on. Then swap the coil from that cylinder to another one. If the missfire moves with the coil then you know that the coil is at fault.

Coils are a very common failure on TFSI/tsi's after loading software, especially st2 and up. I've had this countless times on the older TFSI/TSI's

Get vagcom, see which cyl is misfiring, swop coils to see if the misfire follows the coil, if it does, replace it. If not, Do the same with plugs

99% sure this will solve your problem

long time ago there was actually a replacement campaign for coil replacements so it is a common issue yes. And no the campaign ended long time ago , you can't get free coils from your dealer anymore.

Few years back when I loaded SW on my car @ Experience Performance in Durban it did the same.

Car at the time was stock and SW was my first mod.

On the dyno before the SW was loaded car was fine, after SW loaded car did what you are describing. Fitted coils from a Polo GTi that was there at the time and all was fine,..went to buy Red-Top-Coils and never had issue, (car since few other upgrades Intake, DP etc...)

Logging the car would be your first step tho,.. :hi:
