Smoking Polo Gti

Post by imizk »

Hi guys.. I have a 2008 Polo Gti 1.8T 20v.. Its got 93000km. Have it for a year now and its stock with just a downpipe and exhaust done on it. Ive noticed that my car is smoking whenever its left on idle like at a traffic light or if its just idling for more dan 5 min. As soon as i start to rev it or drive, it puffs out clouds of smoke but then stops smoking. It smells like its over fueling and i have spoken to mechanics and was told that the valve stem seals need to be replaced. Can anybody confirm that for me or is there multipe diagnosis for this problem? If it is valve stem seals, how do i go about replacing them. Car still has all its power but does have a bit of lag.. please help.

Correct me if I am wrong here, but valve stem seals will emit smoke all the time and not on idle only.

I believe this will be the seals on the Turbo. Do this:

1. Let your car warm up to the normal engine temp.
2. Park it on an incline, with the front facing down (face down a$$ up).
3. Wait a few minutes. If you see smoke like you just explained, then it is the seals.

Nothing too major, just replace them sooner rather than later as this means you're gonna lose oil quicker. And it is not healthy for the Turbo in the long run. Keep checking oil too.

I did park on an incline before and it does smoke .. after a few quick revs it stops smoking but once I leave it to idle again, it smokes

Then it's the Turbo seals. But I may be wrong since I cannot see the issue. Let's see what the others say.

In the mean time, just keep checking and topping up on oil. :hi:

As pyro-zn said, it's the turbo seals.

Very common problem on 9n3 PGTI's with downpipes.

The downpipe lets a lot more air flow through which lets the turbo spin a lot more freely and causes the turbo seals to wear prematurely.

A lot of threads on here of people with the same problem.

Yes, the agents will take away your Christmas bonus ... till 2019. It can be sorted under Warranty.

How do you replace the turbo seals. I went to a turbo repair shop in Maitland and they ask me R4500 to repair it. Is it something i can do myself.

The color of the smoke is white. It only smokes when it is idle, but when you drive the smoke slowly stops. I did replace my PCV and it did stop smoking, but after a few days, it started smoking again when it idle. When I took out the new PCV I felt oil in it as well as in my air pipes.
