Golf 6 R - Cyclic tapping noise

Post by russelldewee »

My Golf R has this cyclic tapping noise coming from the engine... It occurs at idle (low revs). Ive listened and tried to locate it . It seems to be coming from the front right bottom location of the engine but i cant be certain. It is going in for its second service today at 25000 km in centurion. I have a feeling VW will tell me nothing is wrong BUT clearly something is wrong as my previous GTi sounded nothing like that and ur average vw doesnt have a "tick tick tick" noise coming from the engine... In the event vw dont find the fault can anybody help in determing this annoying culprit or someone i can the car to?

TFSI motor.... my mk5 was also noisy, it is the lifters and high pressure fuel system as well as the chain that you are hearing. All these things working together make this tick tick tick noise on idle.

Ok, but why does it not on all the vehicles? A 2.0 tfsi drove passed me in a parking lot and it was like all other cars, quiet.. My golf 6 gti never sounded like that and my nissan quashqai is quieter than my golf R. Something is definately amiss.

The golf 6 uses a different motor to the golf 5. The mk5 engine was noisy, the R motor you have is basically an upgraded mk5 motor as found in the S3. Does the car make this noise on idle or when driving too? WHen I filled my mk5 and fuel stations sometimes they thought it was a diesel, but I did remove the under bonnet mat.

Don't the injectors make a ticking noise, esp audible at low revs?

Ahaaaa.... I knew something was amiss... VW is replacing the HP fuel pump. They heard the noise deduced that the HP fuel Pump needs to be changed... :hurray:

So I am awaiting the part to be delivered to VW Centurion and have to take it back. The key here is now, how much less of a noise (which is pronounced at idle) will there be. In motion the vehicle sounds "normal"...

I'll let you'll know if there is a change on my MK6.

Thanks for the comments.

If they change the pump ask them to change the cam follower, if that pump was REALLY ticking away then it/the plunger must have damaged the cam follower.

The G6 GTi doesn't have a bucket cam follower, so I'm not sure what you are referring to as the cam follower on a G6. Whereabout are you based? having it properly diagnosed is a better start than playing the swap and check game.

just an update on my previous post the noise that was felt thew the high pressure fuel pump was actually caused by the cam shaft gears (teeth) worn thus causing a rattle thew out the camshaft and felt on the pump fitted new timing chain guides and tentioner refitted the cam head back and tested all quiet and no noise best of luck guys

Hi All,

Sorry for the thread hijack.

I’m noticing now that I’m also hearing a ticking sound from my 2011 MK6 GTi with 107000km.
It has gotten louder and can be heard in the car now.

From the info here it seems the mk6 GTi was not impacted by the cam follower issue.

I’m worried it might signs of the tensioner on its way out.

Can anyone recommend a workshop or someone in Gauteng I can take it too?
