Golf 2 engine swop

Good day,

I would like some advice if possible, I have a golf 2 with the EV engine(1.8 K-jet with solid lifters) which bent valves, since I am struggling to find spares and struggling with the K-jet system I would like to do a swop, I would like to do carb to eliminate wiring and because I can use a some of the parts from the K-jet setup.

What I would like to know is:
1. Which engine would be the best option
2. Would there be a compatibility issue with my current gearbox
3.where would be the best place to get a recon engine.

My location is Pretoria/Centurion
