Avoiding the reopening of an very old can of worms.... After Hrs and hrs of searching and comparing spec data sheets, iv decided on Shell Helix Ultra 5W40, mainly because it as the better viscosity index and its not Castrol.... and Castrol Synthtrans....
I usually drive my Golfs like rentals but has never done Full synth on any....
AGG/FFZ combo ......
Anyone see any problems here..???

Re: Synth oils in 8v
Yes, you will have issues. That oil is way too thin for your motor. You will have low oil pressure when the engine is hot. Standard spec is 20w50. I wont go lower then a 15w40

Re: Synth oils in 8v
Morning chucker02, well here is the thing, the only full synth oils with a 15w weight are heavy duty Diesel oils.., Rimula and such. They have a very aggressive additive package which is not ideal for petrol engines. Further more, when you compare the cinematic viscosity of the full synth and a helix mineral at temp, it does not differ much, which is a result of the much much higher viscosity index.....chucker02 wrote:Yes, you will have issues. My Volvo t5 for instance runs on a 0W.... no pressure issues...
....that said, have you had personal issues with this?

You're seriously overthinking this for an 8v motor

Re: Synth oils in 8v
Just use the correct oil. Newer cars have much tighter clearances in their engines thats why they use thinner oils. I have used helix 20w50 in all 3 my golfs and have never had a days issue.

Just use a 15W 40 mineral oil and change your service intervals according to your driving habit.
