2.0lt 16v

Post by Shafiek_allie »

Hi Guys

Hope you all well.

My brother and are building a 16v for my mk1.

To give you guys some info on our build.

We running the 2e block with the 84.5 Bmw piston and the Tdi Diesel crank.

Our head is one of the last ported heads done by the late Francois Louw. It’s solid lifter.

We still need to finalize the cans we going to run.

My question is around the valves. I would like to run a big valves but don’t want to go the Supertech route.

Is there a cheaper way out ?

NB: the mk1 is only going to be used for drags and nothing else. I’m not expecting it to be drivable.

Thank you

There is no cheaper way out if you go for performance and drag racing. Build a solid and strong motor to the best recipe there is available or you would be spending double that when motor breaks and you need to build another motor.

Supertech valves is the best solution and the priciest too. You can go for stainless variants too and ones where the exhaust valve stems are sodium filled for cooling. It is all up to how much you are willing to spend. Upgrading of the retainers and top hats is important and that is where the mishaps happen on std valves.

I have seen motors with std valves outperform motors with all the available add on nice and pricey parts. It all boils down to how well the motor is assembled and balanced for optimum performance.

Seems like you want a high power NA motor, why not just go for a 20v head instead? Cam prices are not far off and even a stock large port head will outflow most big valve 16v heads.

Was considering going the 20v route but very happy with the 16v.

What is the highest lift a can going with stock valve springs ?
