how to adjust mk1 carb

Post by Deniboy »

Hi guys i have a mk1 1.3 carb im not too sure if the car is running too lean or too rich however theres one screw in the back of the carb i was told thats the idle speed screw when i purchased the vehicle the guy had the idle very low it felt like the whole car was vibrating then when i confronted him he told me about that screw and so i turned it clockwise abit once the car was warmed up and the idle seemed to be fine im using the car for 3months like this and i noticed that if i have the car parked for about three hours or so when i start it i would have to keep the choke pulled out abit for it to drive smooth for about 5 to 10 minutes before i push the choke back in if not the car hesitates and if i drive for a long period of time the car starts pinging so im concerned if i adjusted the idle correctly or if the cars to lean that is why im having these issues once again im not clued up with vws but im a d.i.y guy so can anyone please assist me on getting this right or let me know if this was the correct way to increase the cars idle

back of the carb is idle MIXTURE adjustment. 2.5 turns is usually OK.
Idle speed is on the side of the carb where the cable runs.

Not a recommended job for DIY.

As per previous thread. Go see a mechanic.

Details on your location? We could refer you to someone decent.

Well, if you keep track of the adjustments you made, i.e. carefully count the screw turns, then you can always backtrack, so I don't think it's too risky for DIY.

Both screws are actually behind the carb when you stand in front of the car. The mixture screw is pretty much in the middle, while the idle speed screw is on the left back corner (i.e. driver's side).

There is a pic and some descriptions in this thread.
