citi 1.4 2003 starting issues

Post by Rustig »

I have a Citi Golf 1.4i 2003.

It has run beautifully for the last 15 years (104000). Until two weeks ago that is.
After driving home and parking in my driveway, I wanted to move the car forward a while later. No go.

If the fuel line is disconnected, it starts almost immediately. Obviously until the fuel runs out. Put the fuel line back and it will not start.
The smell of petrol is clear as it then floods.

Fuel pressure is good as it fills a two liter bottle in about a minute Id say.
New coil, old one tested fine, but for incase, I changed it. White proper spark.
Checked return of fuel to the tank. Fuel pump pressurizes fine and stops. Checked fuel rail and regulator.
New sparkplugs.

As I've said, the car runs beautifully until switched off. On trying to restart, no go, unless the fuel pressure is released by taking the fuel line off.
All the injectors sound fine. (screwdriver test)
All voltages check out on the injectors.

I don't have a diagnostic tester, and I don't know if that would help either?
O, the only other work done was a week or so before I tested the temp gauge outside the vehicle. I have previously replaced the temp sensor, but the indicator still doesn't work.

Where to now?

So where to now?

I have checked the fuel pressure with a high end pressure transmitter. The fuel pressure increases immediately when the fuel pressure regulator vacuum line is disconnected.

The car often starts first time round. Will idle long enough for the radiator fan kicks in. But. Switch it off and it wont start. It has now flooded enough that I will have to drain the oil from the sump first. The oil smells distinctly of petrol and has risen noticeably in the sump. The car has good compression.

To summarize: Fuel Pressure more than 3 Bar
Good spark from the new (and the old) coil.
Spark plugs replaced.

The injectors and obviously fuel rail is now out for testing. I hope to test those one by one this week end.

Any help will be appreciated. Thanks.

I also mentioned that the temp gauge doesn't work and that the coolant sensor has been changed. Twice even though it measures out fine.

Maybe 1 or more injectors are intermittently being stuck open?

How many bar compression did the test show?

Low/minimum allowable compression and higher fuel pressure will cause a no start..

Undo the vacuum line from the fuel pressure regulator and crank the car. If fuel comes out of the vaccum line the fpr diaprahgm has burst. Put in a new fpr.

The fuel pressure regulator works perfectly.
No fuel leak from it or the fuel rail. The pressure in the rail increases immediately if the vacuum line is removed.

I will post pics of the injector test tomorrow.

Thanks so far.

When it idles, usually on the first turn of the ignition everything seems fine.
It is the second attempt that almost never works.

citi 1.4 2003 carborated starting issues

Post by Mubarak786 »

Hi there. I am new to this. I would like to ask advice within this forum.
I have a citi golf 1.4 carb 2006 module. Car does not want to start as no spark. I checked the coil, its not that. I checked the battery not that. The starter is fine. I also checked the control module not that either. It has aftermarket alarm system disconnected it and also still dont start. I am running out of ideas has to what it could be. Could any of you assist me in guiding to what it could be perhaps. I suppose it is a electrical problem and not a mechanical problem.
Please assist.
Thanks in advance.

Open the distributor cap and crank the motor. Check to see if the rotor is turning.

That is not my issue though. I have good spark at main coil wire and plugs. Im in Ethiopia until Friday. First to dump the oil that now has a lot of fuel in it and then back to testing the injectors over the week end.

Some feedback.

I started out with a new temp sensor. Same results. The car starts when the fuel line is disconnected.

Then a long frustrating journey started.
Replaced the coil
Dis cap
Tested all injectors. Recorded the spray pattern.
Compression test. All cylinders 10 bar
Checked hall sensor. Perfect.
Checked timing. Valve and electric.
Had a Snap-on diagnostic tester. Cleared error code on temp
Did not return.

Measured out output of ecu. Perfect. Have fuel. Spark. No start.

Then..bought a diagnostic tester. Spend some time learning. The answer was simple. The temp reported was minus 34 degrees C.

Bought another temp sender. Temp showed ambient. Two turns perfect idle.

Dont trust a new temp sender. Measure it out.

How did water get into a new sender? No clue...

Thanks for all the advice. A spare temp sender in the toolbox.
